The Film Thread

Wow, I knew that Jones ended up owning a personal security firm, but I didn’t realise him leaving the film industry wasn’t entirely voluntary!

Lol. Not sure you can fuck up a cheesy 90s (80s?) movie about immortals that cut each others heads off. I really enjoyed them, watched a lot of the TV show back in the day as well. But that first movie is… not a great rewatch of a cinematic masterpiece.

I think the opposite is true. They need to pump these movies out, I’ll watch all of them. Hard to mess up a movie about immortals that cut each other’s heads off.

I’ll give you it doesn’t hold up well, but you just know that a remake will fuck it up totally.

Case in point - Mad Max Fury Road.

I was too young to watch the original Mad Max’s when they released but I went back and watched them after Fury Road. All of the Mel Gibson films are terrible, sorry. They’re fun stylistically but they’re just not good movies.

Fury Road is fantastic.

Yeah I agree.

I raved about it years ago to my 2 teenage sons - so one night we all sat and watched it - at the end of the movie the eldest said “those were the shittest special effects I have ever seen”
And he is right - looking back it is a pretty poorly made movie saved by the soundtrack and the story. I would happily watch it again though.

Watched Spiral, the new Saw reboot. I was really looking forward to it because honestly, Saw especially the first 2 movies, was one of the very best I ever watched. But even with Chris Rock and Samuel L Jackson…it was pretty meh…started off pretty well but when it gets into the crunch of the traps, the eventual unveiling of the protagonist, which I pretty much guessed after a while, it just spiraled off into an abyss of ‘the movie is ending because it has to’…maybe it will do well enough for a sequel…but on the look of it…it is leeching off the cast more than the plot…

Whilst the acting and special effects in Highlander don’t hold up today, can anyone honestly name 1 80’s action film where the acting and/or special effects holds up to today?

Die Hard???

wasn’t that 1990 when it came out?

Plus the special effects used when Hans Grubber falls from the roof aren’t that great compared to today

Still looks pretty good to me.

I think the Alien movies hold up well. Indiana Jones and Back to the Future not too bad either. (Except the train, the train was crappy)

Finally got around to watching Nomadland on Thursday.

This is the third movie from Chloe Zhao that I’ve watched after Songs My Brother Taught Me and The Rider, and even though none of the movies are in theory about anything I would have any interest in, I have to say that I love them all. The cinematography and music are always perfect and there is an authenticity behind the performances which makes them almost more like documentaries.

They aren’t the kind of movies I would recommend to most people I know, because most people I know don’t seem to appreciate movies further than how entertained they were for 2 hours.

I can’t wait to see what she manages with Eternals as I am a big Marvel fan, and it will be interesting to see how much of her style can be maintained in a comic book blockbuster.

Similarly I have watched a few movies by the Shang Chi director recently - Short Term 12, The Glass Castle and Just Mercy and the Captain Marvel 2 director - Little Woods (or Crossing The Line as it’s called in some countries).

Again all were interesting from a film appreciation point of view, though I found Little Woods fell a little flat in the story. Of all of them I would say Just Mercy was the most entertaining.

I do appreciate that Marvel are seeking to involve directors who have and can make beautiful movies that cover socially important issues.

Woody seems to be able to play any part given him…

Loved watching cheers as a kid, but never thought he would be a movie actor. Enjoyed money train but never thought he would have much of a career. Can’t think of a single film role I have seen him play that I didn’t enjoy. Whenever I see him cast in a film, I look forward to watching him.

Predator is still a great watch. Cheesy action and actual special effects mostly.

Fans of John Wick will love Nobody. Great mix of all out cheesy action and humour. Bob Odenkirk is great as always.
