I’ve just watched Blitz (it’s on Apple+ from today) and rather enjoyed it. However, I felt it would be better suited to a miniseries. Various “episodes” were rather rushed.
It also felt weirdly old-fashioned. Sort of like the dramas that the BBC would do in the 1970s with a bit of a Dickensian feel to it - broad characterisation and unlikely coincidences.
However, it did have plot points that didn’t gloss over the unpleasant elements of the period (looting and so on), although the 12 certificate probably kept certain things in check.
The cinematography was a plus point. I’d still recommend it.
Broadly agree, but found the negatives outweighed the positives.
Not sure why I felt so emotionally detached despite the main character being a child and his strong performance.
I saw the Gladiator 2 last week on a good cinema with my girlfriend.
It is a spectacle, filmed beautifully, but Ridley Scott gives absolutely fuck all about realism, history, sanity or anything else.
I had a grand time watching it, but it’s a pretty bad movie with a pretty bad plot.
But it was entertaining and it was beautiful on the big screen. I am not sure I would have enjoyed it as much on a normal tv though.
But on the cinema screen it is worthwhile to watch, but don’t expect Dune (incredible) or even Avatar 2 (nice enough adventure with so-so story that looks magical on the big screen). And don’t expect Gladiator 1. There are a lot of movies made every year far better than this one. But it had entertainment value, which is something despite the story being a joke at times.
But that’s just my opinion and I am a fairly critical man.
Conclave is a good film, strong performances all round. Hits the beats you’d expect from a film about the Church, and because of that some of the less predictable twists hit better.
Fiennes will be nominated for awards; Rossellini, Castellito, and Msamati all deserving of plaudits as well
Went to see Wicked last week. As a massive fan of the show (seen IM play Elpheba several times) I was a little worried as the key to the show is the abillity of the lead to nail Defying Gravity. Absolutely true to say I applauded at the end, she was fucking wonderful.
The idea of a black actress greening up when the original was white is obviously racist and the 2 gay charachter inserts for “modern audiences” were laughable. But other than that, absolute banger.
And if you don’t have a sense of humour, don’t bother responding.
I watched Relax, I’m From the the Future last night. I was trying to pick among 3 or 4 films on my wish list but wasn’t feeling any of them so went for the curveball of a film I’d never heard of before but has Rhys Darby as the lead (Murray from Flight of the Concords).
I would not necessarily recommend it, but it was exactly what I expected and the light easy to enjoy thing I was looking for.
