The Film Thread

In case anyone thinks about going to see “Nosferatu” : don’t. Easily one of the worst movies I’ve ever had the misfortune to endure. As useless as one of these 1:1 cover versions of good songs. The only entertaining thing was to wonder why Count Orlok looks like Nietzsche after a weekend on drugs.

That’s a pity, I was looking forward to that. I think our local arthouse cinema is planning on showing the original at some point. They booked the pianist again after the popularity of the Metropolis screening.

(I’m assuming you mean a copy of the Murnau film, not the Herzog one with Klaus Kinski?)

Of course you can give it a try - that was just my opinion and I read some comments of people who really liked the film.
And yes, I referred to Murnau. Regarding the setting ( baltic city scenery ) I was reminded of Herzogs adaption.

I just cant get into any film with him in it. In fact for some reason I actively avoid them.

Well that’s a shame. I found the whole back story of how that original film came to be fascinating and that kind of drew me towards the new release.

I watched Conclave last night. It’s both incredibly well done and a bit silly. The premise is that the guy in charge of running the election for the new pope uncovers evidence of a scandal relating to some of the main candidates and has to get to the bottom of it to make sure they dont make a terrible mistake with the election. Once its fully unraveled it all seems so underwhelming that it all just feels like a waste of time. Albeit a very well acted and beautiful looking waste of time

He’s excellent as Maui in Moana

Yes, you’re right 100% on that one.

He’s perplexing. He has undoubted Hollywood star quality, it just doesn’t reflect his box office pull. He has been involved in a couple of big hits, but in most cases they are either existing franchises (Fast and Furious) or studios with an inbuilt audience where the people arent coming to see him (Moana). I think the biggest films he’s had outside of that were the Jumamji films and I’d imagine there a good number of industry people who would argue that for that audience the pull was as much Jack Black as him.

I think he’s simply not interesting enough to carry a franchise. Either as an actor or a person.

Just glanced at IMDB . He is apparently starring in a remake of ‘Big trouble in little china,’ with Gary Oldman. I wonder if that will have a western setting as i think that was the intention of the original script.

Big fan of the original so not liooking forward to this one.

Argh, that is shit. It is such a weird and wonderful film, one that shouldn’t work but does, that it feels like a good result would be to just not make a horror show (think the Point Break remake).

The changes to the script that got the project started compared to the one that was used for filming were so significant there ended being arbitration hearings over whether the studio could withhold a writing credit for the original screen writers. Fox lost and it ended up being viewed as a black eye for them because the film ultimately bombed and the whole experienced caused Carpenter to go nuclear on Hollywood, and so it made Fox look foolish that THIS was the film they went to the mat to protect. Funny how well received it became in the end.

Wouldnt surprise me if Dwayne Johnson stars in a remake of that at some point too

Escape from New York was a great film too. Always surprised that Kurt Russell didn’t do more films as I thought his performances were usually quite good.

I am still fuming that you all made me watch that movie about the shark under Paris. So I cancelled Netflix and got Apple TV. Someone had to pay for the wrongdoing and none of you will own up to it.
