The Film Thread

I would have enjoyed it more if it didn’t have arancha sanchez vicario screaming for the entire movie…

I actually prefer DC because of that “seriousness” factor or the “emotional weight” as I like to put it (or being “dark”, as Deadpool put it :joy: ). It took them a while to properly translate it to the big screen, though, in my opinion at least, and that happened only with Joker. Not sure why is that, creative shackles or bad decision when it comes to the selection of directors and accompanying staff… You know your games and you saw how well the comics translated to the Batman Arkham series, for example. I wish they could do it in films as well. That sheer emotional weight is why I loved Logan, for example, but Marvel doesn’t go down that route often.

When it comes to MCU TV shows, I’ll offer my two cents: WandaVision is uneven but makes for a decent viewing on the whole (Paul Bettany is ace), Falcon and The Winter Soldier is disappointing but Loki is sound, easily the best of the three.

I was pressganged into taking my nephew to see Guardians of the Galaxy years ago. I was extremely reluctant as I am not a fan of superhero movies - never have been. GOTG though was absolutely brilliant - so much so that I went to GOTG 2 during its opening week.

On a completely unrelated note - I watched Castaway (Tom Hanks) the other night. There are a lot of nods in that movie to the evolution of humans - many which I missed on first viewing - it is much deeper than a “Robinson Crusoe man shipwrecked on a desert island” type tale.

Honestly, it’s absolutely superb. It’s probably one of my favourite films ever. It’s got some gory moments, but its less a traditional horror about werewolf attacks, and more about the experience the lead characters has in coming to terms with what has happened to him.

On the theme of superhero movies, I watched the new Suicide Squad over the weekend. Even from the hiring of Gunn to direct, it was clear they wanted to do something completely different with this one than the first one, and to that point they did. They seemingly decided to keep the bit about the film being fucking shit though.

Unfortunately I couldn’t find it on YouTube or Netflix. So some other recommendations would be highly appreciated.

Truman Show Trivia that no one wanted to know - the house is the actual childhood home of Republican House member and soon to be convicted child sex trafficker, Matt Gaetz.

I like the MCU they a great popcorn movies. Really looking forward to the spiderman and Dr strange ones coming up. Some are undoubtedly average but the baseline is not that high.

Watched Fast and Furious 9 and it was crap. You have to suspend reality to watch the MCU. But F9 had space rocket cars, swinging a car from one island to the next on a piece of rope, magnets so strong you can pull a car through a building, and bad guys who’s shooting would make stormtroopers blush. At one point one guy is circled by a dozen army guys with machine guns about 10m away (literally a circle around him) the guy does a full 360 killing them all.

Infinite started as well as a good premise. A reincarnation version of Highlander. But second half of the movie was a mess. By the end I didn’t care who lived or died. Also the bad guys motive was weak as fuck. He wants to end all life in earth as everytime he is reincarnated he has full memory of past lives while in the womb.

There is a lack of era defining movies at the moment.

Think back at how Matrix, Lord of the Rings, or Star Wars pushed boundaries. The brilliant stories of Forrest Gump, Shawshank redemption or the Godfather. Or historical based movies like Gladiator or Saving private Ryan.

What’s our modern equivalent? There is little that defines our movies today beyond Pixar and the MCU.

We seem to be living in the age of TV where TV series is where the creativity is at. Netflix, HBO and AMC.

Mad Max or 1918 would be my only nominations for groundbreaking cinema recently.

Other than what the MCU has accomplished, I don’t think there’s been anything else groundbreaking recently, though we have been living through a pandemic for the last couple of years.

But there have still been some great or good movies that i’ve enjoyed in the last few years other than MCU ones.

Glass,
The Highwaymen,
Joker,
Knives Out,
Just Mercy,
The Trial of the Chicago 7,
News of the World,
Nomadland,
Land

And i’m looking forward to Candyman and Dune

Wondering whether the modern James Bond films of Daniel Craig could be identified in the last decades worth of movies, for remaining relevant.

I always remember seeing Jurassic Park and Indépendance day as a kid I would have been around 10 and being completely blown away

Dune might be. I’ve spent past few years mostly digging for horror offerings from lesser known but amazing directors like Peter Strickland and Robert Eggers but I’m a sucker for quality sci-fi and other than Blade Runner 2049, I haven’t recently seen a movie of that genre that is so thoroughly captivating, deep and emotional. I think it will be heralded as a bonafide classic one day, just like its predecessor. It also gave wings and credibility to Denis Villeneuve to make a big money Dune adaptation, a film that was long deemed unfilmable.

If that one is done right - and I’m so hyped and worried about it at the same time - I think we’ll see one of the greatest films of all time, one that might sway back the creative onus to the big screen. I hope to see it in cinema rather than on HBO Max.
