The Film Thread

David Cronenberg’s movies are always pretty weird and great at messing with our heads.

On a similar note, I first saw The Shining when I was about 11 or 12. My parents had take my sister to some event that would mean they would be returning some time past midnight from and I decided to see the movie as it was on Channel 4 at the 10… Needles to say I put on all the lights and opened all the inside doors at one of the add breaks and was basically watched it petrified from half behind the sofa…

The Guardian often print lists of films around a theme. For their Easter one, they have actually gone for films with rabbits in them.

I would have expected this to be mostly comedy films, as rabbits look a bit goofy to begin with, but there are a surprising number that involve horror elements:

Incidentally, the best Easter film is Life Of Brian.

Went to see Project Hail Mary and really enjoyed it. A wee bit long but on the whole enjoyable.

Just watched some scenes from The Rainmaker…30 years old that movie…feck…

Anyways…

‘Sworn in by a fool and vouched for by a scoundrel. I’m a lawyer at last.’

What a great line.

We watched ‘Train Dreams’ and I really have no idea what it was trying to say.
Bloke suffers tragedy and becomes a hermit.
That’s it. Nice scenery though.
By the way, the title is misleading, it isn’t much to do with trains. ‘Tree Dreams’ would have been more appropriate.

He dreams of the chines guy being hit by a train. But yeah, I felt the same as you. Wish I’d have watched secret agent instead

Apparently he’s much more involved with the death of the Chinese guy in the short story than in the film.
It’s a shame because I usually have a fondness for slow, elegiac movies.

yeah watched it with the family…

first five minutes in and i was thinking it was gonna be a really hard watch… but in the end i really enjoyed it.

thought they could have utilised special effects more, they are litterally in another solar system… you might get 30 odd minutes of planets and stars… and maybe they could have taken a bit longer to ‘find’ the solution to the problem, but on the whole i really enjoyed the experience

In a way o was glad they made the story more about the characters in a way. The karaoke scene just about had me in tears… not sure why but maybe because I only have the emotional range if a prokaryote!

yep that scene was great and yes i appreciate the character buikding…

at over 2 hours long i feel they could have thrown in a fraction more effects…they dont need to be on screen for long, a few moments…

Really? Always thought they were quite emotive, myself. Memories of Eriador past and the destruction of Arthedain hinted at in the memory of a maiden long since gone with the barrows important as well. Merry’s Barrow blade many, many, many pages along played it’s part in the demise of the Witch King.

Oh My God. I watched this last night. It was incredible.

It is one of the few things I’ve seen that have left me feeling hollow. Only seen it twice, once when I was working my way through the Ghibli films, and once during lockdown when I was watching them with housemates during lockdown as they’d never watched the Ghibli films.

Both times once it was over I just sat there in silence. Beautifully told and animated story, made more harrowing knowing it’s based on the real memoir of Seita character. Really drives home the horror.

Sort of movie everyone should see. Given what’s going on in the world atm I can think of a few global players who would really benefit from hearning it’s message.

I watch both the Ghibli anime, and the live action version. Both harrowing and depressing.

There is a live action version? I was reading up about it afterwards and apparently the author had turned down multiple offers to adapt it to film thinking it would be too difficult to film the level of destruction it required, but when the anime was pitched to him he thought the story boards captured it perfectly in a way that film never would.

I had to look up wiki to find out when it was made…

Grave of the Fireflies (火垂るの墓, Hotaru no Haka) is a live-action TV drama adaptation of Grave of the Fireflies, made by NTV in Japan. It was produced in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II. The drama aired on November 1, 2005.

Watched War Machine a couple of weeks ago, very 80’s like - perhaps more reminiscent of the later Rambo movies because of the army boosterism. Wasn’t bad but not a movie I will be rushing to watch again.

This week I watched Crime 101 with the missus despite the good cast. Found it disappointing although I think my wife enjoyed it. Might be down to the fact that I have watched a number of great heist movies from John hudson to Michael mann for example, but she largely watches Korean dramas -and she is a big fan of Chris Hemsworth.

Last night we watched Slumberland with our daughter. We all really enjoyed it. It can be difficult to find a genuinely good family movie but this was one. Great performances by Jason Momoa and Chris O’ Dowd. But the lead actress (I think it was Marlow Barkley) was fantastic.

Me: Uh, What?!
Also Me: Fucking YES
