The Film Thread

Watched Cinema Paradiso recently.
Found it to be an unusual film in some respects, but not only did it resonate some, it’s also a film that will remain in the memory banks for quite a while… Really Good 9/10
Subtitles were needed unless you are fluent in Italian.

I’ve never seen it but when I hear the name I think of Guest House Paradiso… :face_with_peeking_eye:

Haven’t seen that one for ages, but yeah while it was bordering on kitsch at times, it was the enjoyable kind of kitsch

I watched Eden on the weekend, the one about the Germans who fled to the Galapycos in the early 30s, and I don’t know what to make of it. It was interesting and definitely elements that were good, but the german accents that let the actors do were so bad that it was really off putting. By half way through the film I couldn’t even believe anymore that Daniel Brühl’s accent was legit

Has anyone seen Undertone or Hokum?

Seen both.

I kind of expected a more detailed answer from anyone who had seen either! :joy: What did you make of them? I loved Oddity, so I have high hopes from Hokum, while reviews for Undertone were outstanding from what I’ve read.

I’m a man of few words.
Hokum follows the same pattern as Caveat and Oddity, a supernatural consequence of a human action. Great script, very well acted and the tension is built excellently. Some great jump scares too.
Undertone is also a great movie. It’s almost two separate movies in one, with the audio and visual not meshing (done deliberately).

I’m a big horror fan so it’s great to see original ideas being successful.

We’re at the stage of finally moving on from dvds. It’s a sad moment in many ways. I always loved having certain classics at hand and searching around on the internet isn’t the same.
So, anyway, we’re going through the collection before we give them away and tonight’s selection was Raging Bull

What a masterpiece. Brilliantly directed and acted, and a gut wrenching portrayal of fame, jealousy, madness and loss.
10/10.

Watched Suzume recently. Directed by Shinkai, who also directed Your Name, Weathering with You, and The Garden of Words. All of which are worth watching - particularly Your Name, and The Garden of Words. As a director his films have something Ghibli-ish about them, recommend for any who enjoy their work.

On to Suzume. A lovely film, wonderfully animated, with a strong story that i would view as fairly typical of this type of film. I really enjoyed it

When in Montreal… then why not

Another Classic from the DVD collection. A beautiful, bittersweet movie and even more poignant in light of recent events…

I watched the Bone Temple, the Ralph Fiennes focused follow up to 28 years later, and I was left cold. It was interesting enough, but its existence feels like a representation of cinema being in a bad place. It was not a film. It was a 2 hour episode of tv

Reviews for Star Wars should be taken with an enormous pinch of salt given how much of the fandom is committed to hating everything Star Wars related now, but reviews of the Mandalorian are awful.

I didnt have much interest in it as I found the show really boring and didnt even try the third series, but even for the fans of that this appears to have been a massive miss.
