If you watch “The Toys That Made Us” episode about He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, I believe they mention some influences from Flash Gordon in the creation of the franchise (the main inspiration being Conan the Barbarian)
I have wondered what it would have been like if Brian Blessed had done the voiceover for Darth Vader.
It might have been surprisingly restrained. There is definitely a difference between pre-Gordon and post-Gordon Blessed.
I’ve had that thought, but with Matt Berry

Opps Wrong thread
He-Man was so good not even Jared Leto’s presence could ruin it.
The director definitely overrode Leto’s natural tendencies before they overwhelmed his performance in a bad way. I thought Skeletor could’ve been a little bit better but overall I think he did a good job
Watched Remarkably Bright Creatures over the last couple of days.
Honestly an ok film, good to see Sally Field still going strong. Not one for the trash heap, a pleasant story and way to pass a couple of hours if you’re at a loose end.
Amazing what you can do when your foundation is a decent story with characters that have worthwhile development arcs.
We went out to see the new Spielberg film, Disclosure Day. I really enjoy it.
I was half expecting something similar to Close Encounters, but this is more playing on UFO conspiracy theories, using Roswell in 1947 as the starting point. However, it is definitely in the show-don’t-tell mode of storytelling.
I did think there were lots of callbacks to motifs in other Spielberg films, but that’s to be expected, and he is still a master filmmaker at work. With the news that Clint Eastwood has retired, it does make me wonder how many more films we have from that golden age of directing. We just have to enjoy them whilst they last.
I heard a story yesterday that left me floored - did anyone else know that initially Spielberg was tied to Cape Fear and struck a deal with Scorsee to give it to him in exchange for the film he had been developing and run into issues with - Schindlers List.
Imagine the world where we got the initial versions of both of those films ![]()
Was not expecting to like Roofman as much as I did, had it down to be another forgettable run of your mill type, but it’s actually a intriguing story with quite a bit of depth and slight bizarreness about it.
Materialists meanwhile was a pile of garbage but Johnson and Evans on screen together makes it an automatic 10/10.
Obviously, if legit, no release dates set yet…
Sean Penn Is Making a Jan. 6 Film and Trump Is Going to Hate Every Second of It
Sean Penn is coming for Trump’s legacy on the big screen. The three-time Oscar winner has written and will direct an untitled feature film for Warner Bros. centered on the January 6th Capitol attack, told through the eyes of a police officer caught in the middle of the chaos that day. Bradley Cooper is expected to star in the lead role.
Penn has never been shy about where he stands. He attended the House Select Committee’s January 6th hearings in 2022, sitting alongside former D.C. Metropolitan Police officer Michael Fanone, whose story the script is believed to closely mirror. Fanone was savagely beaten by rioters that day, suffering a heart attack, a brain injury, and burns before later being diagnosed with PTSD. President Biden awarded him the Presidential Citizens Medal. Fanone, once a Trump voter, has since publicly walked away from that support entirely.
Penn has called Trump “an enemy of mankind” and warned that he might try to destroy the world before leaving office. Now he is channeling that conviction into a film that Warner Bros. will bring to the widest possible audience, with production set to begin in mid-2027.
Trump tried to bury January 6th. He even pushed a $1.7 billion fund to compensate the rioters who attacked officers like Fanone. Rep. Jamie Raskin called it exactly what it was: a payout to insurrectionists and white supremacists. The courts, the history books, and now Hollywood are making sure none of it gets forgotten.
LOL to Hollywood taking the moral highground, exposing the truth and dishing out justice…
just some carnts, playing carnts, posturing about carnts in a movie about carnts, made by carnts and probably scooping all the awards in a night full of…well you get my drift…
Still going through the old dvds. This classic last night. I’d forgotten how good it is, and how gorgeous Michelle Yeoh is ![]()

Stunning film. I preferred Hero but that whole genre and the way they film them is stunning viewing.
Speaking of Hero, its really disappointing how difficult (impossible?) it is to get the original Chinese version anywhere these days. If you recall the whole “presented by Tarantino” thing when it was first released in the west was done as a way to mitigate concerns people wouldnt see a film with subtitles and it was a huge success. And then that version seems to have disappeared to have been replaced with the bad english dub
Wow, I have the original on dvd somewhere and honestly prefer it that way. You can also get it on Prime here in the UK. Sense prevails.
Got to admit I’m a bit of a sucker for a lot of stuff with Donny Yen in it. Rogue 1 enters the chat. I recently watched Andor and straight into Rogue 1.
Superb, apart from Cassian looking a bit fresher in Rogue 1.
I thought this was a nice take on why the two new hit films are both crap, but that maybe people of our/my age are supposed to think that.
