The Film Thread

I know Im in a minority here, but I don’t get the continued affection people have for this guy’s work outside of his Shadowsverse that he has now been living off for over a decade

I liked JoJo Rabbit but it is starting to feel like a case of diminishing returns…

‘Boy’ was truly brilliant and ‘Reservation Dogs’ is fantastic, but I don’t know how involved he was with that.

I’ve rather enjoyed his films, but I wonder what he will make of Klara and the Sun. I’m guessing that it is worth reading the book first. I saw the film adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go without knowing what it was really about (my son was studying it for his Highers) and I just found it devastating. Brilliant film, but the subject matter, and how it was handled, was really disturbing.

Not sure if you’re in the minority. What We Do in the Shadows (film) was a master-piece and Jojo Rabbit was good, in my opinion, making his filmography in the last ten years mostly puzzling for me in terms of quality.

It seems like we’re living in times where moving from independent to big budget production seems to spell disaster for the artistic and/or overall quality of film. When I get the time, I start my Internet search at the releases from the likes of A24 and Neon, as well as films that gained recognition at the likes of SXSW, Sundance and Cannes, and then take it from there.

It’s a bit depressing to see so many wonderful films buried beneath the ad campaigns for the latest prequel, sequel, reboot or re-imagining but I convinced myself ages ago that searching is a crucial part of the journey.

I’m currently waiting to leave the Middle East, was supposed to fly yesterday but got cancelled. Now all I can do is sit in my room watching movies and waiting for the call to come in.

Just watched The Mummy with Tom Cruise. Fell asleep twice, it was so dark I had no clue what was going on.

Also watched Road House with Jake Gylenhall. Pretty good, very dumb of course but that’s expected. Nowhere near as good as the original.
