Yeah it was an absolutely stinker. Standard Tony Scott fare, where he does something silly that 50% of the time actually comes off but the remaining 50% of the time is borderline unwatchable.
I watched the Long Walk on Sunday, a LONG awaited adaptation of an old King book. The premise doesnt entirely make sense and the book only works because it kind of fills in the gaps enough to accept it. The films does none of it. It just jumps from event to event with no development of anything that would make anything that happens remotely earned. It truely odd film.
I think we all have a Rocky building block in our early DNA film buff structure… Guess it means we will be watching this when it lands :0)

When’s the last time you watched Rocky ? Well, you’re about to watch it again if and when you see I Play Rocky in cinemas on November 6. The new film, from Dumb and Dumber director Peter Farrelly, dramatises the turbulent making of the 1976 classic that catapulted Sylvester Stallone to fame and created a pop culture institution.
While it is poetic how the Cinderella story of Rocky Balboa was a reflection to Stallone’s own meteoric rise, the trailer for I Play Rocky borders on hilarious. The movie is effectively an unofficial-official Rocky remake, with actor Anthony Ippolito—who also played Al Pacino in The Offer, which dramatised the making of The Godfather—doing an impersonation of Stallone that is halfway between genuinely good to good enough to crack up the boys at the bar.
The mythologizing of Stallone and the Rocky films is also a tad too much. Besides its cloying “Gonna Fly Now - Theme From ‘Rocky’ (Epic Version)” ass score, seeing Ippolito’s Stallone ditch his generic stage name for his legal name feels like a studio mandate to have its own “The Facebook” moment. All biopics must do that now, didn’t you know?
I don’t know if I Play Rocky is ingenious or derivative. I just know that now that the IP sequel/remake/reboot well has run dry, the next step in strip-mining intellectual property rights for parts is to take a half-hearted The Social Network -style approach to how these things were made. The trailer for I Play Rocky outright promises to go too far by recreating some of Rocky ’s famous scenes frame-for-frame. I kind of wonder how much they have to assemble a whole new “cut” of Rocky .
Three hours is a bit short for the story really. As long as the usherettes bring ciggies and ice cream in the intermission and Ron can play a few tunes on the organ, it should be a treat.
We’ve booked tickets for Sunday to see it. Mostly rave reviews, but it seems to have upset online imbeciles for some reason.
I saw a review by Mary Beard, who was mostly positive as to the accuracy aside from a couple of characters removed for narrative purposes. She did say it should have had more sex and humour, though.
I haven’t been following it but I thought there had been some criticisms as to the armours etc not being correct for the periods in which it is set? (minor things for most viewers)
It is meant to be set in the bronze age, and the armour looks much later technology apparently. Given that it contains gods and monsters I’m not sure that is the most it wavers from reality.
Oh, it’s way dumber. Most of the criticism is coming from the same place as the criticism of Emily Wilson’s 2017 “woke” translation that became so controversial on the right. These are people for whom the protection of the western culture is central to their ideology, and so classics like the Odyssey play an outsized role. At least they do conceptually because the idea that any of these chuds could meaningfully critique the Wilson translation is funny. Or even that they know the difference between Odysseus and Sinbad. But these are people whose deep commitment to the classical western thinking that founded our culture makes them pretend to be scholars of the classical literature. You would be amazed at how many Rogan bros who left high school barely being able to read will cite Seneca’s Letters from a Stoic as essential reading (that no one believes they have read). So they are particularly touchy about non-classical interpretations.
But ultimately its about the two black ladies in it.
I saw a guy at the gym today giving off “I want you to know I practice MMA vibes.” He sat down next to the punching bags, and proceeded to empty his gym bag - all the MMA practice gear, a tripod to put his phone in to film himself, a fucking laptop for some reason…and, I shit you not, a copy of Seneca’s Letters from a Stoic." Why he got it out I dont know because he didnt open it. But why he made such a production of getting any of his shit out either I dont know because all he did was 20 mins of something approximating a warm up and then he left.
These guys, and they are very much a type of RW guy, are such fucking posers.
