The Film Thread

I had a lot of time for the first movie. I think it asked a lot of important questions as a story and as a piece of cinema it pushed a few boundaries and broke some new ground.

Unfortunately I felt the sequels, while still having some entertaining moments, didn’t necessarily answer the questions in a satisfactory way.

I don’t think I’ve watched any of them in over 15 years, but have considered introducing the offspring to the first one.

As for the new movie. I haven’t watched the trailer and i’m not sure how relevant the concept is anymore (to me personally at least). I may get around to it if I hear positive things.about it, but I’m not in any hurry to see it.

BR 2049 wasn’t bad either. Not bad at all :sunglasses:

Similar feelings. I remember feeling absolutely empty after the second and third films. As if all the good ideas had been used in the first.

Here’s the trailer to the second. I find myself excited at the prospect of a new angle on the story but I see many of the same things that were part of the first story. I’m apprehensive that it may be a rehash of the first.

I think that I’ve watched too many A24 films in the past three years without really noticing it but I can’t recall one that I didn’t enjoy! I think my taste has permanently shifted to dramatic/atmospheric horror and they offer that in abundance (though there are great non-horror movies like First Reformed, Enemy or Uncut Gems). The movies you mentioned aren’t movies you can “love”, in my opinion, because they make you feel extremely uneasy, to put it mildly, but just sit back and watch in awe and dread. I got the same feeling with Saint Maud or In Fabric, for example. All of these are outstanding films, in my opinion.

I enjoyed Killing of a Sacred Deer, but the other ones I’ve seen just left me flat.

I didn’t like any characters in Midsommar so I didn’t care what happened to any of them and the vvitch had a lot of atmosphere, but I think I was just expecting more from it than the way the story went.

They’re all really well made movies, but for me, just disappointing from what they could have been with a bit smarter writing and better character development.

Willem Dafoe losing his shit in a Lighthouse should have been epic, but again didn’t hit the right notes.

Edit - just had a check and I also liked Under the Skin and Room. so maybe it’s just Aster/Eggers who I don’t like.

Think as film enthusiasts in general over many years, surely watching The Matrix is still part of our education so to speak… Besides, anyone with the endurance to sit through three versions of John Wick as I unfortunately did, has conditioned themselves for anything else that needs to be faced.! :0)

Watched this a few weeks ago

Very original idea for a film. The lead actor Winston Duke is exceptional.

Can be a bit claustrophobic - I put that down to filming during Covid which would make options limited. The central “moral” of the film is a bit laboured - I felt like shouting “we get it move on” at one point.

Certainly makes you think.

Lead actress Zazie Beatz is also a great actress. She’s half German, born in Berlin.

I actually enjoyed the first two John Wick films, the third was a bit hmmm. I basically sat down without any preconceptions that this would a film that would “expand my mind” etc. Pure shoot em up entertainment and who wouldn’t go on a rampage if some f***wit killed your puppy?

Daniel Craig has said he thinks Jürgen Klopp would be a good James Bond. I need to see that film.

The name’s Klopp…

Liverpool v Man City (Sun, 16:30 BST)

Liverpool

James Bond himself Daniel Craig suggested in an interview this week that Jurgen Klopp would make a great 007.

The Liverpool boss was not so enthusiastic.

“If I walked out of water in swim shorts that would be the moment the whole world switched off," said the German.

The pink tux might work though…

I loved the first one, not so keen on the second and third but perhaps that is more to do with the story line and the actions of a couple of my favourite characters

Wasnt it him that was stopped from taking part in the Justice Collective’s song because they didn’t realise he was a fan?

I thought the concept was great. The Hotel network, currency, the rules, and this structure, network and high society thing going on. Very clever.
