The Film Thread

Promising Young Women is everything…performance from Carey Mulligan took my breathe away, absolute perfection…very glad I watched it as I didn’t think I’d enjoy quite as much as I did.

Though I’ll never forgive it for getting me hooked (temporarily I hope) on a Paris Hilton song.

Cold, dark, conniving, spiteful…vengeance.

Gave Banshees of Inisherin a go. It wasn’t really for me. I wasn’t getting the humor and I don’t understand the Irish civil war enough to appreciate allegories or metaphors alluding to it.

When you lose that, there isn’t really much of a film left, or at least one which makes much sense to me.

I did feel sorry for Colin Farrell’s character. There was at least something to relate to there.

Just my take on it: I think you could switch Irish Civil War with any civil war that was ever fought and you’d still get the same points that film was trying to make. I thought it was an amazing film (though I had some trouble with the language as there were quite a few archaic words). The chemistry that Farrell and Gleeson have is amazing.

Basically all you need to know about the Irish Uprising is this, the English are a bunch of bastards and we knocked seven shades of shite out of them to the point they went running.

You’ll find the above will help you get by in any situation if you ever visit here!!

I so wanted to enjoy these 3 movies but once I get through the drug like hit of nostalgia I’m left with feeling of being conned. I’ve kind of watched them again since, wanting more of that nostalgia thing but man they suck.

The new Indy movie being discussed a while back brought this (slightly disturbing) old episode flooding back…

A cautionary tale?

Finally got around to watch Moonage Daydream yesterday. Brilliant, what a trip.

Was that at the cinema? I was meant to be seeing it at our Cine World but had to cancel after I got ill.

Think I’ll wait for streaming now.

Absolutely ploughing through these films on Sky Cinema,

The Lost City made for another pleasant viewing, good mix of light action comedy and romance rolled into 1 with Radcliffe playing the bonehead villain. Captured some nice landscape shots and yeah we got to see Channing take off his shirt a couple times because why wouldn’t you with a physique like that…gotta make the most of that jungle life.

Nah, unfortunately not. I was planning on watching it in the cinema with the Mrs (massive Bowie fan as well), we were both excited when we saw the teaser trailer, but then life happened. Watched it on Amazon.

I believe it’s still on in Vechta next week which is about an hour’s drive from us but I think I’ll just go with streaming as well.

And so we come to the end of the year. In 2022 I wanted to see how many new movies I could watch over the 12 months if I really made the effort. On average most years I only watch 25 to 30 new movies.

In 2023 I managed 125. I could have fit in a few more, but I didn’t include sequels to films I hadn’t seen the first one of and allowed myself some byes for films from directors that I find problematic. So what did I learn?

Honestly, not a lot. More that I affirmed what I already knew. Watching more movies didn’t expose me to many more good films that I wouldn’t already have watched. By now I generally know what I’m going to like and generally what I’m not.

Not counting Marvel movies, my top 10 of the year were:

Everything, Everywhere all at Once
Prey
Glass Onion
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
A Jazzman’s Blues
Apollo 10 1/2
Honor Society
See How They Run
The Wonder
Along for the Ride

There are of course still many movies I have not had the opportunity to watch which may make the top 10 such as The Whale, Babylon, Nope.

The last one I perhaps would not have watched if I had not been doing a challenge, but include MCU and it isn’t in the top 10 anyway.

Bottom 10 were:

The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild
Texas Chain Saw Massacre
Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again
The Legend of La Llorona
Blonde
Uncharted
Marmaduke
A Day to Die
The Commando
Men

Normally I would perhaps have watched just three of these. Biggest disappointment of the year was Blonde which I was had expected to enjoy much more than I did.

I don’t think it was a banner year for movies, with only about three of my own top 10 that I can see myself watching again in the future.

For next year, while I will still keep up with new movies that I think I will like, I will probably try and watch more older movies which I’ve missed for one reason or another rather than watching new films which are probably not going to be that great.

Is it good. I saw it in my Netflix feed. But I have been avoiding it since it’s on the recommended list.

That’s some achievement Deneb :stuck_out_tongue:

Other than Glass Onion I must say I don’t recognize any of the others (from your top 10)…where do you find them?

It wouldn’t be in my top 10 if it wasn’t!

But I recommended the first Knives Out to my sister expecting her to love it and she didn’t enjoy it at all. I generally try and avoid recommendations these days. My tastes are my own and I can’t expect anyone else to agree with them.

Focus with Will Smith and Margot Robbie.

Not a bad watch, what starts out as petty theft crimes told in a sassy and enticing way between 2 partners in crime both professionally and romantically. Things get a little complicated when they up the ante and we’re greeted with a surprising twist.

Sounds like Bird on a Wire!

Guilty pleasure for me is the Carry On movies. No they wouldn’t get made today, yes they are mysog ah hell you get the idea. Still great entertainment when you’re pissed over Christmas. Thought I’d seen them all. Saw Carry on Cowboy was on last night. Never seen it. Probably the worst film in the history of the silver screen. Absolute tripe of the lowest order. Garbage.

Would actually be funny to see one made today. Would be enough material for a successful Woketube channel.
