The German Election

There is a huge difference between e.g. the SPD or the Greens and the AfD. Their policies differ on virtually every single aspect of society. To say these are not choices is laughably stupid.

Holy God, AfD have more voices than SPD in that poll? :open_mouth:

I didnā€™t realize that SPD have gone down like that already. I understand that Scholz has as much charisma as the cactus staring at me towards where I sit (probably less in all honesty), but stillā€¦

They had 20% in the 2017 election and have been mostly down in the dumps since then. Scholz having a last minute momentum before the last election was actually the outlier.

There were elections in ThĆ¼ringen and Sachsen this year : in ThĆ¼ringen AfD 32%, SPD 6%ā€¦in Sachsen AfD 30%, Spd 7%

Who are they???

Heā€™s a career politician that never held any public office. Essentially heā€™s been in opposition his whole life, under Merkel in his own party. The rest was just a forced time out that he used to cash in. Would be fascinating to see how he will manage any real responsibility, when he canā€™t just criticise other peopleā€™s work.
Personally canā€™t stand him and I donā€™t trust him at all.

BĆ¼ndnis Sahra Wagenknecht.
More or less a one-woman-party. Sahra Wagenknecht has a strong communist background, is in almost every german talk show. She is eloquent and has a strong pro-russian position. In her recently founded party she mixes anti-migration slogans with DDR nostalgia.

I discovered his face just yesterday on the news. The least one can say is that he doesnā€™t look very likeable. He reminds me a bit of Mr Burns in the Simpsons.

And so he has a past with Black Rock? This doesnā€™t smell rosyā€¦ :fearful:

Yep, Mr Burns. Once you see it you can never unsee it. And everyone sees it.

The populists have tailwind all over the world. Werenā€™t those provinces have strong Left support?

Wagenknecht left the ā€œLinkeā€ some time ago in order to make her own party and seems to hit the nerves of our brothers and sisters in the new BundeslƤnder. Her exit was a blow for the Linke from which they havenā€™t recovered yet.

AFD like Vox will hit a high that might be 18% that might be lower.

Itā€™s why Le Pen has continuously knocked at the door. In fact I have a feeling that Trump will hurt rather improve their chances.

People point to Brazil but Brazil was only ever electing Lula or Bolsarno and when Lula was removed from running that ended it for him.

Le Pen could win and people will point to something but Macron needs replacing

I believe they call them tankies.

We had a discussion about tankies recently which brought out the Russian spambot.

We had a US election thread (plus Trump, Trumpā€™s trials and US politics). The German elections are vital for the future of the EU and for democracy worldwide. This election is the next big test in the fight against despotism.

Three of which would be deleted, if it were my decision. The original US Politics thread should be the only one on the subject; similarly, there is no need for a separate thread on this, or any other, election.

Was there a separate thread on the UK General Election 2024? No.

The creation of unnecessary threads on here is ridiculous.

Think we should have a separate thread to debate this.
