He is probably best as an orthodox 8, but he is absolutely fine sitting a bit deeper as his strengths are going looking for the ball, getting it to his feet and making a pass. His issue is more that Amorim’s side’s failures leave him scratching for explanations and one he has landed is that “this hyped kid doesnt know how to play my football.”
His best path back into the the side is for Amorim to be sacked. But I think Utd are red pilled at this point. They have made too many changes over the years and what they need to do is back the guy through the difficult periods. That means that it will be January, Utd will be struggling and needing one more player to unlock the mythical Amorimball and needing to raise funds to bring them in. Mainoo will want out having got 0 minutes and seeing his world cup opportunity rapidly go by him. We then swoop in with a 30 million quid offer and watch their heads explode knowing they have to serious consider it.
