The Man Utd thread

He was almost certainly the best manager for the players they have/had, at least compared to ETH and Amorim.

It’s a decent squad for counter-attacking football. ETH understood this when he set up for the FA Cup final v ManC.

That’s probably the weight of expectations. They had a side that was closer to mid-table than top of the table. But expectations are top of the table. If that same side were Everton or Aston Villa, the supporters probably would have been happy.

Yeah this is a really good point - they still had De Gea bailing them out in a lot of games, and players like Bruno, Rashford, Greenwood popping up with goals to get them over the line, but for the most part they were shite. Lots of comedy with Maguire and Lindelof back there too.

It’s weird because I feel like the Ole days were the peak banter era for United, even though they’re much worse now.

I say this unironically, but he “understood the club” and got a lot of benefit from that. It allowed him to ride, or even raise the vibes by saying the right things, by emphasizing things the fans think they want, and that generated a lot of positivity. Remember, that seminal PSG win that gave us the ATG Rio gif was not just about the win. It was because it was done with a collection of young academy players on the pitch. You see, Ole understood the club. He knew that players with an attachment to the club were more valuable than high paid established players at Utd for an early retirement. He was bringing the Fergie approach back.

But it was smoke and mirrors. That PSG win was an utter fluke aided in large part by a really bad penalty given to them and with players who ultimately were never going to be Utd standard. That sort of performative stuff can be important for a manager. It is obviously a huge part of Klopp’s appeal and success. But to get real success there has to be more substance underneath and ultimately Ole didnt have it. You could see from the reality that many of their best periods of play came towards the end of games they were chasing after they had thrown the tactics and formations out of the window and just had players doing what they felt needed to be done to score goals. His football ideas were ignored by his players, the bulldozed their way to salvaging points, and then he went out of spoke about character and the Utd way, playing the final whistle etc to the fans and they ate it up. But by the following week they’d find themselves throughoughly outplayed by Crystal Palace for 70 minutes

Oh yeah definitely if you can’t laugh at the team at that minute you can definitely laugh at whatever the Jimreaper is doing.

I think he gets a lot for that Covid season but it was a massive anomaly and the one people should put an asterix on regardless that it’s Man City or not that won it.

They’ve regressed from being a decent side under LVG to a counter attacking side under Mourinho to a really counter attacking side under Ole to whatever that is now

No one is praising him, just understanding why some Man Utd fans may think fondly of him and his time there.

But no worries, you’ve got my full support for turning another corner next week.

They’re really having an absolutely shite season, don’t they.

Teams just calmly coming to Old Trafford, beating them and beating them well is just no surprise these days.

Even in our worst days in my following, we were never this bad.

Nah, this is worse.

Though also down to our improvement in the second half of the season.

Fair to say the Europa League takes top priority now. The same Cup they stuck their nose up at for a generation.

Like last years FA cup, they just cant can they?

Over to you Real Sociedad.

And to this Zubi bloke that must really be pleased with his decision to play in a mid table La Liga team, you better be good mate.
