The Middle East Thread

Over a hundred dead in a blast in Iran. Not clear as to who is responsible, but just adds to building tensions.

Israel is really trying hard to stir-up an escalation. :see_no_evil:

Fuck, it was the memorial service of the assassinated commander, it can’t get more provocative than this.

Don’t forget: as long as war goes on, Netanyahou stays in power. As soons as it ends, he’ll be finished. That’s why we shouldn’t expect peace anytime soon. Israel will try to stir up as much shit as possible, for this single reason.

Maybe. It isn’t characteristic of what Israel has done in Iran in the past, not a particularly high value target, just provocative. There are other actors with an interest in fanning the flames.

There’s no concrete evidence linking Israel to this.

Except for Israeli drones attacking Beruit.

There is no question around that one. Hell, a Likud member has even congratulated the government. But there are real questions around the Iran attack.

Ah. I missed the Iran attack and thought it was in reference to Beruit

The MO is definitely different than the usual Israel/US tactics. But, it doesn’t mean that they can’t change the modus operandi or act through a proxy. I remember the assassination of an Iranian scientist which also didn’t fit the known MO of Israel/US.

I feel the attack was designed either to intimidate Iran by showing that Israel/US can hit deep inside Iran, or to infuiriate Iran into a reckless response. This attack, along with the assassinations of Sayyed Razi Mousavi and Saleh al-Arouri is making Iran and its allies look weak.

Probable, but if US/ Israel did do the strike, they would have claimed it

A strike on a civilian gathering isn’t that intimidating. An assassination inside Iran would be far more effective. I agree that the motivation is very likely to provoke an Iranian response.

if it wasn’t for Jacques Cousteau, it’d just be a pile of sand not worth fighting over.

religious wars are the bane of humanity.

Care to elaborate? I’ve never heard anything about links between Cousteau and the Middle East conflict.

they touch on it in this documentary, obviously not wanting to spoil the legacy of the man who found the oil for Abu Dhabi

Blinken on his fourth visit in three months. During this time things have only escalated or (for the Palestinians) deteriorated. He is visiting nine countries and aside from Israel none holds any ace to stop the crisis.

In other news, respiratory diseases and diarrhea is now widespread in Gaza.

Nasrallah said that all of Lebanon would be “exposed” if there was no response from his group to the killing of Saleh al-Arouri

This is a marked change from his earlier speech on Wednesday.
