The Middle East Thread

Yes, that is unfortunately wishful thinking. We should all do well to remember that the perception of this conflict in the US, in both parties, is radically different than your own and mine. In the US, most people see Oct 7 as legitimising full scale war and they also then naturally see Hezbollah intervention into the conflict on the side of Hamas, as legitimising war against Lebanon. Many don’t, but in positions of power they do and much too large a segment of voters do.
Also, news of torture of prisoners by Israel, videos of IDF soldiers comitting obvious war crimes such as shooting civilians (there are a few such videos), those videos are not shown in the US. The high civilian cost, is seen as natural collateral of urban warfare by too many.

Also, Ukraine constrained beyond belief to fight an impossible form of warfare against the mighty Russian Empire; Israel however, are given absolutely every weapon in the tool kit and are free to do whatever the fuck they want with them; choosing to start new front and escalate as much as they would personally prefer. Meanwhile, Ukraine not even allowed to hit a Russian airfield with a western bomb. It’s insane. But it’s how it is and how it is going to continue to be until at the very least after the election (but probably years beyond that).

I’ve been consistently saying the same thing since October, and got lots of abuse for it here. Israel needed to be sanctioned and stopped or they will cross every red line, commit every possible atrocity. They’ve been encouraged by the West as they committed genocide in Gaza and now there’s no stopping them doing the same in Lebanon. No UN resolutions, no calls for restraint will have an effect. It’s too late for that now

An israeli official has just told the Israeli channel 12 that “Israel is going to war”.

The IDF are claiming that Nasrallah is dead.

I can be okay that a terrorist leader got his just desserts even if I don’t agree with Israel’s actions.

Don’t have too many hopes that Lebanon can find some semblance of sane leadership etc after Hezbollah is crippled.

But if it does manage to do that and get themselves functioning again as a country. Then there’s atleast some silver lining for a country which has suffered so much.

Ideally the UN steps in with a peace keeping force and enforces the peace and strengthens the Lebanese govt in purging the rest of Hezbollah (also having the advantage of keeping Israel at bay), but UN PKF to Lebanon haven’t worked well in the past for various reasons.

I feel immense pride for Israel and Netanyahu. They may be fascist and scumbag, but they have the balls to do the things they say.

i feel like im missing something in that comment…

it sounds really off…but you could replace Isreal and Netanyahu with Nazi Germany and Hitler and your statement doesnt miss a beat…

Yeah, exactly. Either you walk the talk, or you are just a pansy.

This could work as a statement the MAGA crowd might say, as justification for electing Trump.

I hear your point, but ugh.

I’m disgusted with myself too. But that’s only because I didn’t think the likes Nasrallah anything but pansies. Good riddance.

I get what you are trying to say. But nah.
