The Middle East Thread

I sometimes toy with swapping out South Korea for Palestine. I don’t understand why the world has not stepped in, maybe this is what is to come, but doubtful. There are some serious problems in the world and I feel the internet has multiplied them beyond what they really were.

I understand the idea that a murdered baby is a murdered baby regardless of how. It is certainly been a part of my reaction to the debate. Except we know how evocative the idea is and how much more of a visceral reaction it would produce in most people compared to just cold statistics on the number of dead children and babies. When you appreciate that the hard line in Israel are looking for cover to do heinous shit in response to this attack, that is why it is important to take a breath when hearing these stories.

Are you pushing for the President Splett 3-state solution?

BWAHAHAHA

You’re bloody obsessed with Veep!!

Obviously can’t generalise to all, but my friends in West Bank were saying in 2007 than there was no hope for 2 states and they wanted to live in peace in one land alongside Jews and others.

No

It’s these huge generalisations that are the problem. There are lots of countries in the Middle East where different cultures and religions coexist. That’s what Palestine looked like before Britain came along and fucked it up. Could say the same about much of Africa

Netanyahu’s office has just released pictures of dead and burned babies. CNN refused to show some of them.

Did he show the hundreds of dead and burned children in Gaza?

I saw them , and they looked pretty authentic. But the report said there were no details given as to where they were from.

That’s a rhetorical question , right.

I find it almost unbelievable that he’d release stuff like that. Then again …

For those suggesting the Bibi was in on it angle

Of course, that doesnt rule it out. It’s possible he used the same calculation people advancing this theory used and it’s blowing up in his face. But the far simpler solution is the thing his critics warned he was risking happening happened, and the guy who based his reputation on keeping Israel safe would not dare purposefully allow such a failure on his watch

That would be wrong. Make them sit in the same corner. Our teachers used to do that when we were kids. By the end of the detention, we became best buddies.

Im israeli (half, im also Portuguese with roots in Morocco)
and I can definitely say that many many posts here are way off the mark - I assure you Israelis are not as radical as some here thinks.
We never thought Hamas would target civilians this way and the entire country is in shock, everyone knows someone who died or kidnapped (that includes Arab Israelis who also died in the attack)
Personally my family lives in the south, 10km from the battles - my sisters already hide inside closets, they found 3 nazi isis terrorists in their village…

There can be no justification for such attack on civilians and they will pay for it - Israel will try to erase Hamas like ISIS and seems like it gets the complete support of the US,UK and Germany …

Fuck. This means that psycho will go into an all out war, possibly drawing in some of the regional players (Hezbollah, Syria, Iran), to bury this.

I’m ashamed that I laughed. It’s so incredibly tragic.

bibi ? no way man. bibi was on the verge of closing a peace agreement with Saudi Arabia. Would be his legacy after the peace with UAE and Bahrain. A major boost for Biden 2024 campaig - peace in the middle east.

It seems that Iran has instructed Hamas to prevent it and drag the region to conflict

some article about it from the day of the horrible attack https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2023/10/07/hamas-s-attack-on-israel-just-torched-biden-s-deal-to-remake-the-middle-east/d3d3c47c-6517-11ee-b406-3ea724995806_story.html

Israel was not at war with any of those countries.

It’s been five days and every Western governments and even Israel has actually acknowledged that they found no evidence of Iran’s involvement. So, please don’t repeat unsubstantiated rumors.

As for Bibi, he is fighting corruption charges as well as judicial reforms in the courts. Those peace deals won’t save him from jail.

I fear for what my son will think of the world we are leaving his generation.

Where exactly do you find this ‘evidence’? High level military intelligence invariably does not get spilled. Is obvious Iran, Qatar, Syria, Lebanon support Hamas, geez I bet some cowards on this forum secretly do.

@Tamir

Thank you for sharing your perspective. Your personal connection to what is happening is worthy of note.

My take on all this is that Hamas did a terrible thing. It cannot be justified.

In order to try to understand, the lens must be widened, and at that point, it seems to me as though the Palestinians have been crushed, with land, freedom, and prospects taken away by the much more powerful Israelis. The Palestinians have not been without guilt along the way, either.

By the time this latest episode in a sorry history is over, I fully expect many more Palestinians to be dead than Israelis, and the dial moved further toward Palestinian subjugation, and even eradication.

Ironically, a Palestinian faction said, historically, that they wanted to wipe Israel off the map. Israel never said that of Palestine, but they have made a lot more progress toward that end.

The next few days and weeks will be heartbreaking, as Israel moves into Gaza, heavily armed, with a burning sense of injustice, and the global PR battle largely won in readiness for what is about to unfold.
