This is interesting. I heard yesterday that Israel had lost more than 50k people last year, who had permanently moved away. That might not look enormous at first sight, but most of them are among the elite: doctors, engineers, tech reps etc.
They simply have had enough of seeing their democratic rights drained away by a disingenuous government, and having to live within a permanent war zone. One can bet that if the same situation continues, the exodus among this section of the population will even accelerate.
An exodus of the educated and more progressive elements of Israeli society is just what the current leadership wants. A more malleable/gullible populace will keep them in power.
Sure, that’s what Likoud and Netanyahou did when they opened the doors to the ultra-zionist elements coming from Russia and other countries in eastern Europe, promising them new lands to colonize. That provoked a massive shift in political opinions (more religious-leaning than before, with that supremacist touch about it).
Still, when a country starts losing its elite, it does never end well. Netanyahou presumably doesn’t care one bit though. He’ll be dead when things start going truly pear-shaped for Israel. Until then, it’s all about staying in power and not being jailed.
Yup. I know about a German/Israelian doctor who moved to Israel with his family around ten years ago. Now, he’s back in Germany. He doesn’t want his family to live with that permanent threat above their heads.
A Harris victory and a total reset of the whole US / Israel relationship. Before any of that potentially happening , Netanyahu knows he’s got another four weeks to basically do whatever he wants , and if Trump prevails another four years on top.
The outcome of this war is that Israel will have gone from rogue state status to pariah status. They are already accused of war crimes , have been characterised as being engaged in a genocide and now stand accused of a policy of extermination. For the UN and international courts to be talking about any country in those terms is really quite something. For them to do so about a country which has enjoyed almost blanket protection from any wrongdoing since the creation of their State from the Assembly’s most powerful member in these terms surely marks a sea change in the way they are now perceived and the immunity they will be afforded in future. The rising anti-Israel sentiment across the US is testament to what should be a new arrangement between the countries. If elected , Harris would probably have public opinion behind her to bring about change;
This is difficult to judge and Harris, if she wins, will be embroiled in so much GOP skulduggery, that enacting anything meaningful (internal or external, policy wise) may be very, very challenging.
I don’t believe the US can reign them in under any circumstance. The best I would hope for is a 100% ban on any non-defensive weaponry supplied from them.
Just fucking isolate them through weapons embargo.
