It’s so over.
Regime has withdrawn from Homs city. The Russian embassy in Damascus asks all Russians to evacuate. We are witnessing history ! Hafez al Assad took control of the country in a military coup in 1966. Since then, Assad has meant Syria. This is a historical downfall of an Autocratic Order and certainly the biggest single event of 2024. Absolutely historic scenes.
Deir-es Zoor, Homs, Daraa. Russian and regime evacuation, absolutely stunningly crazy day !

You have to say that this guy cuts a pretty impressive figure , especially in light of what he’s achieved in the last week or so. What to make of him though ? Is this really the new (respectable ?) face of Islamism and should he be taken at his word , or are we likely to see , once power is consolidated , a more atavistic side to his nature despite his protestations to the contrary ?

I say be hopeful, but very skeptical. It’s not going to be any sort of government you or I would like. But it’s also not going to be the Taliban.
Jolani understands that Syria is a patchwork of sects and ethnicities. But for all we know, he could be dead in a Russian air strike tomorrow and someone with another vision could take over.
Wait and see. Right now, it is just clear that HTS is the strongest faction in Syria and Jolani has by far the most legitimacy. But there are some good signs. That HTS openly speaks of making Christian bishops mayors of Aleppo, well, it not exactly something we would have expected from someone who grew out of Sunni Jihadism, is it ? So wait and see.
