The Middle East Thread

what kind of question is this, exactly?

I’m Ukrainian, but I don’t recall anyone ever asking me how many Russians need to die as penance for their invasion of my grandfather’s birthplace

Please, have some semblance of moderation for the kinds of questions you’re asking people. He’s not Netanyahu! (or is he???)

EDIT

it’s not really that perplexing. if you look beyond the post into the comments, others are stating that it’s Wagner forces which are likely Russian-speaking.

The south? There are no safe areas in all of the Gaza Strip

I don’t remember the Red Cross sending out a memo like that when Assad and the Russians were bombing the fuck out of Aleppo for two years.

that entire region is just a clusterfuck. the leader of Hamas is hiding in air-conditioned Qatar while the people he is supposed to be representing as a force, are getting shelled out of their homes as a result of their actions.

I’m not picking sides here, I have no horse in this race. But at some point, the people of Palestine have to understand that their best option moving forward it so oust Hamas from their communities and support leaders who want to make peace with their neighbors.

It would be nice to see the UN try to talk reason into Netanyahu but I think Hamas has already crossed its Rubicon

No that’s right Palestine killing civilians is not the answer…unbelievable duplicity.

Hamas majority.

It’s so tragic and infuriating that the Palestine & Israel and, to a greater extent, the region is going through the same vicious cycle for decades without taking the lesson. Palestine won’t go away and as long as it’s there, there will be someone to fill the vacuum. Till the 70s, Israeli forces were battling the Arab armies. That role has been taken up by non-state actors. Palestine groups like Fatah, PFLP, DFLP, etc. who formed the bulwark of resistance have become irrelevant. That role has been taken up by Hamas, Islamic Jihad.

You can try to eradicate Hamas. You may even succeed in that. But you can’t eradicate the Palestine people, and as long as they are there and are being oppressed, there will be another group who will take up the baton.

I’m not well versed in the Kurdish or Irish issues, so, I apologize if I draw any wrong conclusion, but I feel these two issues illustrate the right and wrong ways of dealing with issues like the Palestine. Kurds have been abused by Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Turkey; for decades. But the Kurds are still there and so is the violence. Parties in the Northern Ireland swallowed their ego and put an end to the violence.

That idealism is a recent conceit, that does not reflect most of history. The whole point of the asymmetrical punishment that Gaza is about to get is to create dread. Dread of the next time, that is stronger than the hatred. If you run out of belief that there is a way past the hatred, all you are left with is fear. When the barbarians cross the river, you cross over the Rhine with the legions and kill 100 for every Roman. Will it stop the raids forever? No, of course not. But it will stop them for a few years, and maybe the next time you make it 500 for every Roman.

I think that is more or less where Israeli opinion is now.

If I understand their process correctly, there’s a Council that gets elected and those councilors are the ones who select/appoint a president of the PNA? That this process has not happened in some time, I believe since the last successor to Arafat?

Another form of dictatorship…like Assad and Putin and such. Once they gain power, they never leave

What the fuck do you not understand about both being wrong? You’re the only person on this thread continually suggesting otherwise

And rightly so any show of support for terrorism.

The average age is Gaza is 25, meaning that most people who live there now did not have the chance to vote in that most recent 2006 election.

Why has there not been a more recent election?

Well the point of the memo is that they’re told to leave but they can’t. You may have noticed some of the 40k plus Syrian refugees in the UK. 12 millions displaced elsewhere. Palestinians are trapped and don’t even have the option to escape

Gonna be awfully awkward for them to have been supporting Hamas for 15years whilst their leader is living in exile in Qatar, who instigates a war with Israel that has the ability wipe them clean off the map.

The Palestinians are acting more like Philistines…and even the Arabs have turned their back on them. Sad situation they have found themselves in, from an onlooker standpoint.

I see some uprising of Hamas sympathists in various cities… not a good look for them to be clashing with the location estabishments… just re-interates how feral they have become.

Moving in and killing hoards of people will not eradicate a terrorist organisation. So idea of erasing Hamas is fantasy imo. You can only get real success through removing the issues that they’re fighting for. That takes political creativity and above all will. It appears that is lacking the world over at the moment.

‘Awkward’. The lack of empathy among some on this thread is truly awful

They could still have a Poll to show their dissent for Hamas.
