The Middle East Thread

Is it that bad? I read that the latest models can hit within 50m of the intended target (which is still hardly effective).

On average https://x.com/ArmsControlWonk and collegues calculated it to be on average (note average) ca. 1200 meters. A solitary missile can still hit the intended target, but it is unlikely.

They calculated this based on an israeli military base and hits around it. (1 hit right inside the base area, which was quite large; but many outside).

I’m curious as to how these movements are monitored. I know various tracking apps are available, but I know that military aircraft often don’t show up on them. For example, I can often hear tankers circling overhead, but nothing shows on the apps.

Are there ā€œnot for public consumptionā€ feeds, or do the various airforces intend for certain movements to be seen?

A subtle ā€˜fuck you’ from the US to almost every other ally - this strike has been hanging on the edge for days, but several capitals were advised the strike would not be before Sunday evening Eastern time.

Not quite sure why trashing credibility is a value-add in this situation, but in Trump’s Washington it appears to be

Is it happening right now?

Unsurprising the US got directly involed. I mean it is a proxy US war anyway.

Dont want us to start dropping bombs.

When precisely did Israel get to decide US foreign policy ?

Care to indulge me please? Without dragging others into a messy to and fro debate. My knowledge of this area, both historically and current is miles behind but I know it’s an incredibly complex mess. I’m trying to scramble some semblance of knowledge of it all.

Apologies in advance everyone

2002 perhaps , pre-Iraq.

In testimony delivered to Congress on Sep 12 2002 he (Netanyahu) said ;
ā€œI think the choice of Iraq is a good choice, it’s the right choice …It’s not a question of whether Iraq’s regime should be taken out but when should it be taken out …If you take out Saddam, Saddam’s regime, I guarantee you that it will have enormous positive reverberations on the region,ā€ Mr. Netanyahu said then. ā€œAnd I think that people sitting right next door in Iran, young people, and many others, will say the time of such regimes, of such despots is gone.ā€

Anyone thinking that the greatest foreign policy disaster in modern history was one that would never be repeated wasn’t factoring in Bibi’s indomitable spirit nor the prospect of an unrivalled patsy in the White House like Trump.

This guy (Netanyahu) sows hatred, mistrust , suffering and dead corpses everywhere, since decades. And of course, he manipulates weak spirits like Bush Jr or Trump at will.

And look how well that shitshow went.

That alone, should send any half-decent politician running to avoid getting associated with that pshycopath

I do think Netanyahu had it in for Libya too.

His brother was killed in one of the hostage rescue operations

The operation happened in Uganda but the plane was diverted from Libya to there.

Iran parliament reportedly backs closure of oil transit channel

What a shitshow. And it’s only going to get worse.

No surprise there. I’ve been trying to prepare myself for the price rises to come. I’m already struggling and haven’t a clue where more savings can be made.
Some governments might be happy the consequential inflation might help the debts.

From my experiences working in the middle east, and seeing how the nationals treated the Europeans and Indian catering crews, it’s very much a 2 way street

I’ve always seen a distinct difference in treatment based primarily on complexion, eye colour and hair colour. But they tend to grudgingly outwardly respect westerners
