I’ll add the fact that with PLO’s attempted coup in Jordan , role in the destabilizing of Lebanon, A lot of people from that region of the world would be wary of letting a lot of refugees from Gaza in.

Because this is what happened the last time they tried that ;

This article does not mention some info published by others. e.g

Turkish television footage showed how one by one as the commandos descended by ropes to the deck they were ambushed by waiting passengers armed with what appeared to be metal bars, sticks and in one case, a table. The reception for two commandos descending from a helicopter was brutal – the first was battered to the ground and heavily beaten and the second, landing seconds later, was assaulted by a man with a bar and forced to retreat into a doorway before fighting back out.

Whether these were the first blows struck in an incident that ended with the deaths of at least nine people and the injury of at least 50, is disputed. Those on board, including a reporter for Al Jazeera, said the Israelis fired on the boat before boarding. Israel said it opened fire after its commandos were attacked by activists wielding knives, clubs and pistols wrested from its soldiers. It was impossible yesterday to verify either account.

According to flotilla organizer Greta Berlin, the Israeli soldiers did not start firing until an activist seized a gun from one of them. During the struggle, nine activists were killed, including eight and one, and many were wounded. On 23 May 2014, a tenth member of the flotilla died in hospital after being in a coma for four years.Ten of the commandos were also wounded, one of them seriously.

As per usual Israel initially lied about the events and only after a period did they finally offer an apology. They also moved heaven and earth to stop the ICC from investigating the attack , going as far as to dox and sanction sitting justices.

The UN Human Rights Council Report ruled that Israel’s attack had violated human rights and international law. The report stated that ā€œThe conduct of the Israeli military and other personnel towards the flotilla passengers was not only disproportionate to the occasion but demonstrated levels of totally unnecessary and incredible violence,ā€ and ā€œIt betrayed an unacceptable level of brutality. Such conduct cannot be justified or condoned on security or any other grounds. It constituted grave violations of human rights law and international humanitarian law.ā€

From that article:

In the US, Senator Lindsey Graham called for the wholesale destruction of Gaza.

ā€œWe are in a religious war here. I’m with Israel. Do whatever the hell you have to do to defend yourself. Level the place,ā€ he told Fox News.

From this unbearable feeling of pain and distress, I wish to speak about what I believe is my parents’ legacy. People from both sides of the border have good reasons to hate one another. This is being used by those who feed on hate. But this cannot be the only option. My family does not seek revenge. My parents treated people based on their actions, not their affiliation with any group. We are being comforted by people from all walks of life, regardless of their religion, ethnicity, or gender. Close friends among the Bedouin community have also lost loved ones in the attack.

Our shared future is based on the belief that all human beings are equal, and deserving of respect and safety. This is how I was raised and how I am raising my own children. In the long term, and even if it’s very far away, the only real future is that of hope and peace. Please, stop the war.

And anyone who has actually visited the West Bank or Gaza will have their perspective and sympathies changed forever

It’s true the Palestine fighters contributed to the domestic turmoil in Jordan and Lebanon. But it will be extremely unfair to hold that against them now. Even at present, Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan is hosting over a million of Palestine refugees and there has been no sign of them being troublesome.

@Limiescouse I view the reluctance of Egypt as

  1. Sisi is an autocrat and a despicable human and has no regards for ordinary human beings.
  2. Yes, Israel will want to relocate the open-prison that’s Gaza to Egyptian soil and want to hold Egypt responsible for future incidents.
  3. Egypt is facing various social and economical problems, as it’s inevitable under a dictatorship, and 2.3 million traumatized, brutalized, hopeless, and desperate Palestinians might just be the straw that breaks the camels back.

In essence, I largely agree with you.

This is the most truthful article I’ve seen so far, and hence horrifying. After the Rwandan genocide there was an outpouring of support and compassion, money flooding in, movies being made. But at the time, no one gave a fuck. UN, western govts etc just let it happen. Feels like we’re back there again :pensive:

Approx 3m out of the 12m population of Jordan are of Palestinian descent. Jordan in itself is a country which has had various economic problems and challenges.

Additional refugees from Palestine would not only change the demographics substantially , it would change the present status quo , no country would want that.

Jordan doesn’t want itself getting dragged into the conflict which most certainly would happen if the radical element would get themselves into the refugee camps and then use Jordanian Soil to launch attacks. And any movement of refugees is likely permanent.

It’s time for any of the Western leaders with ANY moral compass to stand up against this and push back on Israel’s carte blanche to do anything they like. Past time.

Stop expecting world leaders to do anything. That only leads to disappointment.

This is importantly a back down. He was previously saying they would not allow aid in under any circumstances, but they are now just specifying it cannot come through Israel. The issue of aid missions wanting security assurances is still be resolved though.

There needs to be a no attack window of atleast 4 hrs per day needed for aid agencies to do their work.

Israel’s solution of Egypt giving some land in Sinai desert for the Palestinian refugees should be totally dismissed.

I think is a pretty good use of 10 minutes (if you listen on 1.5 speed). He speaks with a moral clarity over being able to discuss why this happening and how to respond in a way that achieves something other than appeasing blood lust is articulated with a clarity you dont hear much

His call back to Spencer Akerman’s post 9-11 mantra that the US’ response ā€œmade scandalous the presentation of contextā€ is a point very well made. This is exactly what happened with the beheaded baby story. His point is that even as a Jew and a supporter of Israel you have to be willing and able to stop and ask is the story real, with knowledge of what it would be used for if it was planted and what response it would be trying to elicit, and anyone should be able to do that without being accused of excusing Hamas’ atrocities or of being on ā€œtheir sideā€.
