Thanks, its only a mooted idea. No doubt we’ll see in time.
I think a manager on a shorter deal is more attractive to an incoming owner, as they usually want their own people in. Was the basis for that idea. Hence, cheaper to pay off.
Isak is anomaly to this point, but is nevertheless attractive to an incoming owner.
Henry used to be very actively involved in the sporting side, including giving input on transfer dealings and tactical approaches and the like (no doubt informed by Mike Gordon and the sporting department). He personally engaged with Rodgers back in the day to discuss his various disputes.
But I wonder how actively engaged he is these days. I’m sure he’d prefer a more hands off approach. The consequence of that, of course, is that voices of Edwards/Hughes will be that much more influential, and they backed the appointment of Slot and I’m sure they don’t want to sack him as it’s a reflection on them.
And if FSG have checked out because they want to sell, we’re in a worse situation than imagined.
I actually agree that if they are planning to sell, a contract extension for Slot doesn’t make a lot of sense. The contract for an iconic figure like Klopp is a club asset, a contract for Slot right now would be a potential liability. A clean slate is more appealing.
Nope… doesn’t make sense to me. Performing badly (imagine the financial risk of missing CL), alienating the fanbase, destroying squad value and overpaying for young players is not the sign of trying to prepare the club for a sale when it is probably about 20 times cheaper to just buy out Slot’s contract for under 5m.
No, but what the club are probably trying to be… is be professional. More probably they feel that what Slot achieved last season deserves respect and for him to be given the opportunity to see out the season. Perhaps he was even given this assurance before the season started due to the huge changes.
And thus pending the season review, no decisions have been made and so until then do not be surprised to hear that the owners are committed to Slot. Making a decision now (before the review) would be undermining the process.
But if the season end review reveals that he is no longer the one… I expect a fast decision.
Yeah sorry Im not suggesting deliberate sabotage, Im not quite sure what I meant by the 3rd point. It isnt cheaper to buy out Slots contract compared with rehiring someone else now, if the club are being prepared for sale. Their best commercial value is a manager on a short term deal with young promising players on long term deals. The point was only mooted, but we are on that trajectory, as well, as appearing to consolidate and weather a transitional season. The strongest point arises from Henry’s age, him being 76. As well, I really dont think they intend to swap Slot out. Anyway, its not a point Im prepared to push hard at, I just think, equally, it could go this way and we have to wait.
What you see as being professional, can also simultaneously be seen as being reserved and tight lipped. Which I think they always have been, so probably not much to read into this.
Agree that firing Slot and hiring someone and getting the same results is much more expensive than keeping him. But the results we are getting is not sustainable to long term value.
And signing kids for big money and then giving them a long contract has been proven to be unwise by Chelsea. It only works if we get the right ones.
Yes I agree about getting the right talent for it to work. I always thought Chelsea really got into trouble because of Ukraine sanctions and Roman had to sell, so it was surprised upon him, rather than. being planned for. I could overthinking here, but it also could unfold this way. It’s more me mooting something that we can make sense of, because there aint much sense to be had from the club right now. Becker now looks to be off as well.
The next season of dull, lacklustre football and poor results is on the horizon, but John Henry couldn’t care less; he doesn’t watch the game and wouldn’t know if there is air or sand in a football.
As long as the TV and Champions League money keeps rolling in, and the fans keep buying tickets and merchandise, his investment will keep increasing in value, and he’s perfectly happy with that.
Its simple then, dont buy stuff, and if its that bad especially if the local fans are the litmus test for the feeling (which they normally are ) then dont turn up for the last match at home…a half empty anfield will soon send alarm bells ringing .
Yeah, that’s an extremely concerning and urgent point to resolve. Much more than replacing Slot, even if replacing the latter is also an urgency now, sadly so.
Indeed, this is the worst it has felt since the removal of Thicks and Gillet. It’s moving into territory where the club PR machine cannot manage it, and they will be glad the season is all but over for that.
In further worrying news, my ITK colleague, a fellow red who has indirect links with people in the Chelsea hierarchy and was spot on about the Alonso situation well before anything happend…
He has heard that Billy Hogan wants to quit and return permanently to the US and the reason Edwards (who does what exactly now that there is no multi-club happening?), Hughes, and Slot are all on their last years is because…
FSG are looking to actively sell up.
And as far as replacing Slot, they have had a word with Enrique saying “We want you and nobody else. When you are ready, let’s talk”
And now I am more confused than ever. Where is Slot’s massive transfer window idea coming from?
If this is true, why would FSG finance a huge transfer outlay for a coach who will not have his contract renewed and may buy players that won’t fit the future manager.
Speculating…but I think FSG always had this idea of selling us and Slot’s nightmare season has really thrown a massive spanner in the works. To their credit, FSG did want to leave us with a strong squad and had the title winning manager at the helm. So now the MASSIVE transfer window makes sense. It was like a last hurrah, a parting gift from FSG. But it didn’t work out.
But they didn’t anticipate the season unravelling as it did. So now suddenly we don’t look a very attractive option to any prospective buyers (I shudder to think of all the sharks that might be circling).
