Anyone know what’s happening with TV revenue? I know the TV companies had negotiated a rebate on the basis it is an inferior product.
Does that hold for 2020-21. I think they’ve had all games televised, and with no match attendance across the whole league you’d think that would increase viewing figures.
The decrease in TV revenue is spread out over a few seasons. The £59m down this year just released will show in the next years accounts helping mitigate the £85m match day revenue.
Andy Hughes, LFC’s managing director, said: “This financial reporting period was up to May 2020, so approaching a year ago now. It does, however, begin to demonstrate the initial financial impact of the pandemic and the significant reductions in key revenue streams.
“We were in a solid financial position prior to the pandemic and since this reporting period we have continued to manage our costs effectively and navigate our way through such an unprecedented period.
“Importantly, what has remained constant throughout the pandemic is the club’s desire to support the local community and those who live in and around Anfield and across the city region. We have also worked closely with our city partners and provided unwavering support to the region’s public health departments in their drive to promote the important health messages across the region to help keep local people safe.
“More recently, we willingly made Anfield available to operate as a mass testing centre and now a vaccination hub with the incredible commitment and dedication of our Anfield staff.
“We can now look ahead to the conclusion of this season and hopefully a more normal start to next season. It’s no secret that supporters have been greatly missed at Anfield over the past year and we look forward to having them back.”
Not necessarily. Nike pays a lower base and the last NB shirt was the biggest selling shirt in the club’s history. Over time it should generate higher revenues but its first year may not beat NB’s last year.
Wasn’t NB a set fee? Except for what was sold I’m our own stores it didn’t actually matter on numbers sold did it? I’ve got a feeling the Nike sales have been a lot better than some are expecting. I know start of the season I had to go into Liverpool for something and it seemed every other person was wearing the teal away shirt.
I’d take a stab in the dark at the losses in revenue for 2020/21 being around the £100-120m Mark. Some of that is going to be recouped from the delayed TV revenue of £59m and some may be covered in possible increases on commercial revenue, especially the Nike deal but some NB activity still happens in that financial year too so something should show for that. I think everyone has always expected a bad year this year and a worse one next year. The talk at the Redbird buy in was that those funds would mean we could take the losses on the chin and move forward in the 2021/22 financial year without an anchor weighing us down trying to deal with these past losses first. My concern now is that it was never the Redbird money ensuring that it was the Super League funds they were expecting. Let’s hope this summer we aren’t weighed down too much. This squad has some major needs and Klopp needs backing to get the rebuild done as quickly and painlessly as possible. If he’s operating on a limited budget due to previous losses it’ll stretch the rebuild out over several more seasons during which time we might have our ability to compete negatively impacted. It’ll be bad enough taking a hit on the likely impact of missing out on CL revenue. Recovery of the Covid losses too we may as well wave a white flag on our ability to compete for a few years.
“The Athletic understands that about £28 million in media revenue for last season will be in the next set of accounts. So, in real terms, they suffered a £31 million reduction rather than £59 million.”
They can understand what they like, we don’t take the hit on TV revenue in one go. That was already negotiated and the loss in TV revenue is getting taken in future year/years.
Net is a really simple and sometimes inaccurate way of looking at it but think it’ll balance out and look like a net neutral or even minor profit for next summers business.
Not necessarily, we’ve carried a more bloated squad than Klopp usually likes to deal with in an attempt to deal with the congested fixture list. Too bad Klopp hasn’t got enough players that he trusts. Plus the ones out on loan too I can see a fair clearing of the decks coming this summer.
Just to be clear though, the corrupt Thai PM is not one of the Leicester owners. Dont know if this connection was intended, or just commenting on two unrelated issues (LCFC’s owners and the Thai group that was once linked to us), but I know I had to stop and think to make sure I wasnt going crazy.
Thaksin Shinawatra, the Thai PM I was referring, was never involved with Leicester. King Power, the owner of Leicester, was accused of monopolizing the duty-free business (through collusion with government/military).
That I did not know. Whilst not good, it pales to what a lot of other owners have done.
I still would rank them as probably the best owners in the Prem, followed by Brighton and Sheffield Utd whose owners seem to keep a very low profile, so don’t know enough about them to know what skeletons they have hidden in their closet
