@Mascot One way in for the Chinese if it were ever implemented.
Not sure the Chinese will be chomping at the bit to take over a non-controlling stake in what would have to be restructured as a non-profit collective.
Also, quite a good chance we have now missed the wave of money coming from China. Their Government seems to have clamped down on a lot of that spending.
True but if you open the door, anybody can walk in.
InterestingâŚ
I am Nigerian by birth. American by naturalization.
Became an LFC fan in high school in Benin City, Nigeria thru my late Uncle, who was an avid LFC fan, and who paid his way to Rome for the finalâŚ
Not sure how/why he became an LFC fanâŚ
Followed LFC thru thick and thin (since the late 70s-80s), as we all have in our own waysâŚ
From Nigeria all the way to the US. Passed on to my boys to the extent one can these daysâŚ, esp in the US. Thatâs another storyâŚ
For all my adult years, my life has revolved around LFC. When we lose everyone around me knows whatâs next----
What does that make me? Where do I stand in the echelonâŚ
My point in going thru this ramble is to show, I hope, that this issue is a little complicatedâŚ
Not really. Non-citizens have a lot more voting rights than youâd assume. For example, all residents who are British, Irish, EU, or qualifying Commonwealth citizens get to vote in local elections, while the same groups except for EU citizens may vote in general elections.
Theyâre all close enough and spend enough time in the area to know how the club impacts that area. I think the point is business decisions are being made with no consideration of the local people and area because the people making those decisions spend minimal time there and have minimal appreciation of it. And itâs not just for the area itâs a symbiotic relationship. Nobody wants to play at or do business with or spend mega corporate hospitality money at a place thatâs in a shit hole. The better the local area economy is the better it is for LFC.
Yes, tough to compete with that sort of âfinancial backingâ. No matter where you earned your money.
It is an irony to me that fans have leapt to support what is now deemed the âfootball status quoâ, when the reality of the situation is that the governing bodies of football (UEFA & FIFA) have been shown to be massively corrupt. A world cup in Qatar? WTF?
The EPL itself was a breakaway league. Ironic they now want all clubs to sign documents stating they wont create breakaway leagues. The hypocrisy stinks. Leaving the 2nd division to fight for the original Championship trophy. The VAR nonsense. Lots to not like in modern day football. Yet, the fans are cementing, what is a 30 year old EPL legacy.
That teams like City and PSG got wrist slaps for FFP violations. Indeed, just look at the 4 teams in the in the UCL semi Finals. Its the who is who of scandal clubs. Surely this is not the football we all want. Is it?
Excuse me if I have a massive ironic smirk when I read of fans protecting the established game. Game is so far removed from what it should be, its already a joke.
How many local supporters get in to a Liverpool match compared with our successful teams of the 70s and 80s? Many other teams have the same issue. How many British lads get to play in the top 10 sides of the countryâs elite league? We have 2 or 3. It used to be 1 or 2 Ozzies or a fat Dane.
Iâm not sure modern football is not already well lost, in the UK.
This is partly because unfortunately, many British players now count as non english players.
Exactly how I see it.
Basically, whilst I understand some of the reasons our fans didnât like the ESL, they were effectively protesting against us having a leg up to a similar level of financial stability as the likes of City, PSG and Chelsea.
Currently LFC basically subsidises smaller PL clubs, as we donât take a share of TV money in proportion to our support. At the same time, we are a self sustaining club competing with benefactor clubs, including the likes of Everton and Leicester.
On top of that, we suffer regional and club specific bias in the media, authorities and amongst officials, the latter being something that this season cost us top 4.
Basically, itâs very likely that next season United, City and Chelsea will pull away, and weâll compete for 4th with the rest of a mix of big clubs run like us, and smaller clubs with benefactors.
As it should be, I might add.
Donât agree at all.
Smaller clubs whose support turns up at Anfield and mocks our club, city and fans?
My own view is to hell with English football, Liverpool Football Club first and only.
The previous bloke stopped a fair bit of this, I donât remember much when he was overseeing it.
Ayre was around for the tickets if I remember.
Two SOS representatives at LFC board level
A formal agreement between LFC and Athletic Grounds Ltd and SOS
FSG and LFC collaborate with SOS
Why SOS? What about other LFC fans and their platforms? The moment SOS makes it exclusive of them, they are putting their interest/agenda ahead of the millions of fans. FSG has been called out for not being in touch with the fans, but I will call out SOS for not being in touch with the fans as well. They donât think LFC fans exists beyond the realm of SOS. Such self-righteousness is wrong and disastrous.
Why SOS? Because theyâve taken the trouble to organise themselves into a group, spent many years cultivating a relationship with the club and have written to them requesting a meeting. Itâs open to other fans to do the same if they donât feel that SOS represent them.
Yeah, Liverpool became the club it is today by playing friendlies against Liverpool U23s for a century?
Right now Spirit of Shankly is the only Liverpool fan group capable of exerting sustained influence on the club. Whether that influence is truly in the interests of all Liverpool fans is debatable but it makes sense that they are the ones petitioning the club. There is simply no other organised fan group of equivalent size.
I donât like the thought of the fan representative(s) elected to sit on the board being exclusively from Spirit of Shankly, which is clearly what SoS are attempting to secure. I would hope that LFC will, perhaps, say that if there are going to be two fan representatives on the board that one shall come from Spirit of Shankly but that the other should come from candidates outside SoS, as voted for by fans (LFC website can easily facilitate this process asking fans to submit their own video âpitchesâ as to why they would do a good job for the fans, and ensuring that only LFC members can put themselves forward or vote).
The idea of a âgolden shareâ is rather fanciful but narrowing down what would constitute matters that affect the fans will be particularly difficult to resolve. Arguably, everything affects the fans directly or indirectly.
I donât have a problem with SOS as a concept, but I think they have a track record of flying off the handle, getting completely the wrong end of things, and making things worse. Their default position seems to be perpetual outrage, and their aspiration seems to be a successful, powerful Liverpool Football Club which also doesnât seek to maximise revenues or earn any money.
Fair play to SOS as they are the group with the ear of the owners. If other fan groups organize themselves they might get there too.
My impression though is that it is all a bit old fashioned, kind of like a passionate shop steward talking to upper management⌠although in this instance the disparity, and cultural difference, is even more vast.
At the risk of upsetting people I believe the only fans that should be considered as board members should be from the local community. We have two clubs in the city that are deeply embedded in the ethos and history of the city. I understand that foreign fans support the club and we appreciate the revenue from the shirts etc. I donât understand it but I am of a different generation and could never envisage supporting say Penang PiratesâŚ
Only representatives of the community should get anywhere near the board as they will have a much better appreciation of the symbiotic historical relationship between club and city and the values of both (not entirely sure what values the club holds any more mind you).
