The Owners - FSG

I think it’s a massive assumption that any of these “leaks” actually have anything to do with what we end up doing. If you go look at past “leaks” from the run-up to past transfer windows, not only are they not predictive of anything, they also conveniently run the gamut from not spending anything to having “a massive transfer warchest”.

It’s clickbait, plain and simple, and it works because it winds fans up and/or gets their hopes going. It’s literally got nothing to do with the club yet so many seem to assume it does.

I don’t think we disagree really, I’m just stating that we don’t need additional money injected in, we should already have sufficient financial firepower to make the kind of investment you’re talking about.

Haven’t they done so before? I remember reading that the Virgil deal was not contingent on Coutinho’s sale, and in fact Coutinho’s sale came as a welcome bonus rather than factoring largely into our transfer dealings.

I wonder very often how much of a disconnect there is between the way the club operates, and the way that fans think it should operate. To me, it’s quite clear that the club prioritises lower turnover by maximising impact of each signing, rather than trying to sign more players. The price tag doesn’t seem to matter so much either, even though we tend to focus on how value-for-money our transfers have been. For example, Robertson would have been a steal at £50m, let alone the £8m he was reportedly brought in for. Mané, Salah, and others, their value became apparent after they came here, but more importantly, we got the impact we needed. On the other hand, if you believe the rumours, we were more than willing to match whatever amount Real Madrid paid for Tchouameni, which isn’t cheap. I think value only comes into play with decision-making when it’s the opportunistic deals like Shaqiri or Minamino.

You don’t want to make a signing for a not so low price, and then be saddled with them for a long-term deal if they don’t work out well. It’s ironic that on the one hand some fans (not yourself personally) are complaining that we don’t sign more players, but on the other hand also complain when we can’t sell the scapegoat du jour.

I was very careful to say “moving forward” in my first sentence!

We have been competitive to date, shopping at all segments of the market. The issue in hand is whether or not we will continue to be competitive, to the same degree, moving forward. Given how prices seem to be rising, there is a legitimate question mark over whether or not the owners will invest the sums needed.

I hope they do!

For illustrative purposes only, but let’s imagine three signings this summer:

€120M for Bellingham
€60M for Kone
€0 for Evan Ndicka

In terms of transfer fee, it is small, medium, and large, and potentially that could be three spots in the first team in the next great side that Klopp is building.

If FSG are willing and able to oversee that sort of action, then bring it on.

FSG will never spend an outright 100 million Euros on Bellingham. Even Nunez’s transfer fee is 75 million Euros with 25 million Euros in add-ons.

I can foresee the incoming fume if we see Bellingham end up at the Bernabeu despite LFC’s excessive flirting with him and we end up only with Mason Mount in CM.

So this season is not going to be defined by poor league position, or European success or lack of same.

This season will be defined by whether we sign Bellingham or Mount.

This is possibly the best news of this year regarding LFC. We are most probably continuing with fsg as main shareholders, which I’m perfectly happy with. :+1:

Ready for a 6th/7th/8th position bus-top parade?

It seems you are ready! So happy for you, Sir!

I think you just have to be sanguine about this. The club are always playing down the spending, whether we’re in the market or not.

We’re not going to go into the market having told everyone what we’re going to spend. That would be nuts, and a sure fire way to end up paying over the odds

A lot of people are writing off this season as a massive blip and are pinning their hopes on the supposed FSG midfield warchest for Klopp in the summer which will help LFC next season.

Losing Tchouameni to RM is not so much of a blow to the fanbase but I cannot see how Anfield will react favourably losing Jude Bellingham to Madrid and having Mason Mount being the only midfield addition when he is not even a natural central midfielder to begin with.

Do you mean Anfield, or do you mean lads on Twitter who have been following the club since 2019?

There are probably shit loads who fall into both categories

Twitter might fucking explode. Anfield might have a some murmurs of discontent brewing. However, things at Anfield might change very rapidly if the next 3 years under FSG sees us missing completely on any form of top European football which will lead to FSG tightening the pursestrings due to poor league ( and financial ) performance, leading to a vicious cycle.

It might even reach breaking point rapidly within a year if FSG is perceived as tossing LFC aside for their latest NBA/MLB franchise.

Boston red sox’s fan situation a few month ago is a prime example of FSG angering the fans into visible action.

You can’t be serious? The season will absolutely be defined by league position and European success. Transfers are for the boring summer months when there’s no football to enjoy/get angry about

Missing out on CL qualification for the next 3 years with Klopp is just as likely to take place as a “if my aunt had balls, she’d be my uncle” scenario.

Also, fuck twitter.

When you’ve lived through supporting this club when Souness was manager and the bad yanks as owners, trust me anything under FSG will be a cake walk. The only people who would be unhappy clearly started to support us after FSG and Klopp brought us back into contention.

FSG will never “tighten” the purse strings, they will provide a budget inkeeping with what is available, like they have through their entire tenure here.

With the City case looming over the league everyone will be on their best behaviour till it’s finalised one way or another… When the stadium/training ground loans are repaid we will have the biggest transfer budgets in the league, this isn’t that far away.

I’d like to think @Quicksand was artfully caricaturing the positions of some.

So you’re saying that if we get Bellingham for 10m€ it’s not okay, but if we get Mount for 150m€ all is fine?

That depends. The cash could go direct to the club if new shares for the club are issued to the investor, which is what i thought was being implied last year.

People said similar things before we signed virgil. Alisson’s fee was pretty substantial too for a goal keeper - and that was back in 2018. Allowing for inflation, there is every reason for believing the club could spend £100m on Bellingham - it wouldn’t be all upfront either.

We didn’t lose Tchouameni. Real Madrid was always in the driving seat on that deal - it became a possibility only if they had to put all their eggs into the Mbappe basket, which for a time did look likely.
