contracts are contracts. good luck offloading any of those 1-yr players this season. Thiago, Matip, Phillips, van den Berg our four Bosman’s this year.
Yeah but he didn’t say offloading them.
I see no reason why we won’t buy and that back up for VVD is crap, there isn’t really an argument there.
refer back to start of last season. 9 midfielders on the books, none of the bosman players were sold.
You must be seeing the pattern here. When we sold Mane that was the one time we offloaded a top player with one year left, and he went for the paycheque at Bayern. If we can’t sell the players because they’re not willing to take a pay cut at their next club, then we have to keep them per the contract.
Yeah but we brought in Diaz in earlier than expected, we did it with Gakpo 6 months before Firmino.
We will buy, we are lining up what makes the best sense, we evidently have a list, there is nothing in Pearce article to suggest otherwise and he isn’t the most in the know anyhow.
The only people who should be gutted from that Pearce article are people who wanted Mount or JWP.
Thiago and Hendo will be on the fringe next season, so we attempt to do business a year early.
And that depth for VVD is frankly quite poor.
We will in my view do a deal for a another CB and CM.l, that was my view a week back and it still is. A number of those on that list may also go out on loan or even sold.
I would say Elliott is back up more for Salah, but then are we even playing a 4-3-3?
i.e. nobody.
Seems Twitter has plenty, though of course it’s rather the told your so.
What happens if we over paid now on one of those lads and we then ended up short on the CB who became available.
I would say the second CM can probably wait til late in the window.
will be interesting to see what happens. there’s a lot of different points to ponder in your post.
Formation? when I was doing trials for a U-15 provincials team, the coaching staff explained to us that formation is how you lineup to start each half. after that, you have roles and responsibilities. Trent’s forays into the midfield is evidence of a change in his role, but still lining up as a FB.
Seeing as we haven’t really been venturing into LM/RM players I don’t see us making any big changes in how we set up. Fab hasn’t really been dropping in between the CB like he used to some time ago but he still does sometimes. Depends on where the space is on the day. Henderson/Elliot on that RCM role tend to overlap with Salah more often than Trent towards the end of the season.
Yes, Van Dijk still hasn’t got a pure cover…but really neither does Trent. Seeing as we do have Gomez and Matip as our backup CB’s, and still with Williams and Phillips in the shadows…who is the priority? Could we survive without Trent if he got injured, now that Milly has moved on? is Ramsey ready? so many questions…
Trent has Gomez. Different type of player sure but finding another Trent to sit behind Trent in the pecking order is nigh on impossible. We also have Connor Bradley coming back after a very good loan season. Ramsey has already gone out on loan so that’s one less question.
The drop off from Trent to Gomez is big but not nearly as big as the drop off from any of our four main CBs to Phillips and Williams. Matip and Konate will pick up injuries so CB is far more pressing than RB this summer especially if Gomez might be doing some time at RB.
Phillips and Williams futures are irrelevant in that. They aren’t good enough or quick enough to play in this side. Sell, loan, release or keep them around, they’ll only be playing if there’s a serious injury crisis again. Would like van den Berg to stick around if we feel we needed another option in addition to the new guy. About time he had some time with the first team squad and to see how he’s progressed.
isn’t Gomez one of those “four main CB”. so that’s cutting it pretty thin on the back line. reminiscing of Covid days
Yes, which is why we probably buy a new CB this summer so we don’t end up having to rely on those two again. Would give us four pure CBs plus Gomez who could do bits at CB and RB.
Although credit where it’s due, those boys did come good for us at the end of that season but we’ve no desire to be in a position of relying on them again.
We are not missing depth, we need starter. If we continue use Henderson, Fabinho, Gomez frequently, we will waste another year of Allison, Salah, Trent.
…surely we can get through 1 season with a bit of a lack of cover…means we can go large NEXT summer for insert name here
From 12:55 longtime Bayern executive Rummenigge tells the story of how John W. Henry visited him two years after buying Liverpool FC and asked him ‘can you please explain football to me’.
Never criticise anyone for trying to learn.
lesson learnt with Thiago!
One can only hope LFC signings for midfield for this coming campaign is not only Macallister…If not, we will be seeing Fabinho and Hendo playing twice a week when Europa starts for LFC.
That will be a sight to see!
So Thiago, Jones, Elliott and Bajcetic just cease to exist do they? We’re literally shopping for one, maybe two more midfielders.
I admire your commitment to the bit but this desperation to be negative doesn’t really add much to the conversation.
Mate it’s JUST the beginning of transfer window, can we hold fire on the negativity please
Okay so that’s not helpful. We know Thiago is totally unreliable fitness-wise, Elliott is unreliable in terms of what we need to be an effective midfield both ways (he’s proven this repeatedly), Bajcetic is a kid, as demonstrated by his body breaking down due to overuse at the top level, he needs time and cannot be relied on as a regular midfield squad member.
Only Jones is the solid member of the midfield corps.
The coming season might prove to be Bajcetic’s break out season… But to go in with hendo / Fabinho / Thiago / mac / baj / jones is asking for trouble
I get the numbers argument. But Thiago is almost all the time in the physio’s room. Hendo is ageing and Fabinho is limited.
I think FSG and Klopp know this , there will be 2 more CMs added if only to gradually take over the roles of Fabinho / Thiago.
We had a loaded midfield on paper the previous season but remove Arthur , Keita , Ox (3 of whom barely featured) and then Thiago (injuries).
It’s not a wonder that we finished outside UCL.
And the current problems aren’t only solved by the emergence of Jones , signing of macallister and hoping that Bajcetic carries on.
We need both quality and quantity here.
