Hulk Hogan was a frigging legend and was quite possibly one of the biggest stars of the 80’s and captivated a generation of kids growing the wrestling business like no one else before or after.
Terry Bollea on the other hand was a vile racist prick. Regardless, he was a husband, father and grandfather so there will be family members grieing this news.
Probably would have been better. Less chance of people doing the roids in the bid to become the next Hulk Hogan (Especially with Vince’s fetish of the big man)
Would have been safer with a union etc. Better working conditions.
His penchant for refusing to do the job is there for all to see
I’m talking more in terms of how he was a big part in bringing the product into the mainstream, obviously there are a number of examples of where he likely held others back and played a part in stopping what could have been positive change. I do think it’s a bit wide of the mark to try and blame him for wrestlers using steroids and not unionising given it’s 30-40 odd years later and neither of those things have changed.
I was listening to a radio comedy where they compared it with British wrestling before the US version took off. Dickie Davies with World of Sport on ITV introducing household names such as Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks. Essentially morbidly obese men knocking each other over to amuse yer Nan on a Saturday afternoon.
You can see why the American version appealed more.
Larger than life figure who did more than most to grow wrestling. I’m sure many more people made a lot more money after Hulk Hogan than before. So in a sense he helped the tide to rise and more boats were lifted.
But the story is never straightforward. There’s plenty there with the man that is disagreeable. Like people are saying, he could have done more to formalize wrestling and make it better that way. And as a man his personal views on a few things were dubious to say the least.
Still, he’s a figure from sports-entertainment and so giving a serious, in-depth analysis seems a bit misplaced, as I’m not sure what sort of expectations we have of such people.
In fact, an enormous piece of shit. I am not one for dancing on people’s graves, but also find it distasteful that we are supposed to accept the hagiographic response we often see of people in the public eye upon their death.
About Hulk Hogan, He was just lucky to be chosen by Vince. Clearly modelled his appearance on Billy Graham. Not that great a wrestler in the ring either. If he wasn’t there, Vince would have picked someone else to make into a star. He might have even picked a guy with better morals (but seeing as it’s Vince).
He was influential in getting pro wrestling into the mainstream and no doubts that helped quite a lot of people earn some extra money down the road. But if it wasn’t him, it would have been someone else. The show anyway would have moved on.
