That’s very sad. I knew she had struggled with post partum depression, it doesn’t mention the cause of death, but I assume it’s related.
She had some demons going back years. She’d been working since she was about 10 (she was the coach’s kid in Remember the Titans) and spoke recently about her encounters with sexual predators in the entertainment industry and had reported issue with booze and painkillers.

Gave up custody for her daughter (Wladimir Klitschko is the father) and she also lost her brother a few years ago.

I just heard on the news that Dolly Parton has died. Aside from being an accomplished singer and songwriter, she always struck me as a genuinely nice person. I’ll just leave this here as a little tune that I always loved:

Really sad news - She was an absolute diamond of a person who put so much back into communities all over the world. She was under no obligation to fund literacy programmes in the UK, but she did anyway.

EDIT: I’ll add to this that when living in the UK I found country music a strange curiosity and then after moving to the US at 18, to a city that didnt know if it was in midwest or the south, I found it an utter abomination. That is how I was for the best part of a decade until I stumbled upon this amazing local sunday morning radio show that existed to help people get over the hangover of a big night out and the bubbling depression that can hang over that. It was nothing but old classic country. None of this modern poppy bullshit, just “life is tough but you deal with it the best you can” from the heart storytelling. It was named after the Kristofferson classic, Sunday Morning Coming Down, and so he and Dolly were obviously on regular rotation. Me and a friend used to alternate which of our apartments we’d go to, but which ever it was we’d just put the radio on, make some coffee and lie on sofa for an hour or two saying nothing, just slowly coming to terms with the day.
Amazing times, and some absolutely wonderful music. It was stuff I probably wasnt ready for at earlier points in my life, but am so glad I eventually stumbled upon it.

Mrs ROTW is originally from East Tennessee (global citizen now, but she remembers her roots, and is the better for it). Anyway, huge overlap with, and fan of Dolly Parton her whole life.
Dolly was such a good person. Mrs ROTW was just telling me how she used to go to Silver Dollar City as a kid. I’d never heard of it. Turns out it was the thing in those parts, back in the day, for a day out. Well Dolly bought it, and upgraded the whole thing massively, to give people a much better attraction. Dollywood.
I learned about how her dad couldn’t read and she funded literacy initiatives for kids, and one of her biggest hits - I will always love you - was famously sung by Whitney Houston in a massive global hit. Dolly received millions in royalties, and gave it all away to black communities in Appalachia.
She was a good singer and a good guitarist. Grew up in a two room house with nothing. After making her millions she lived in the same area until the day she died. Married to her husband as a young woman. He didn’t travel with her or go for that sort of thing. He was the complete opposite of her, but her true north, when she came home. He died about a year ago and now she has gone to be with him.
Many people of her generation and background are racist, homophobic and all the rest of it. She used her platform to welcome everyone, and stand with and for different groups that get short shrift, shamefully, in certain segments of society.
Favorite quote? “It takes a lot of money to look this cheap!”
RIP Dolly Parton. Great artist. An even better person. One of the very best of us.

So sad to hear about the passing of the great Dolly Parton. Dolly wasn’t just a huge talented singer, she was a gifted songwriter, astute businesswoman and she knew the music industry moguls could not mess with her. She never forgot her roots
Dolly Parton didn’t spend her dollars on space travel or other stupid stunts, instead she was writing checks to put 150 million books in the hands of children. She helped deprived communties not just in the USA but abroad also. Dolly was more than a talented musician, she was a humanitarian and the kids of the world, were Dolly’s kids.
Rest in Power Dolly, you were one of a kind.

I took it literally. 
I recall a tweet I saw from a few years ago of a guy saying "one of the strangest things about being a kid in band at a black school, is that when you start talking about how you paid for your uniform the number of students whose answer is “dolly Parton bought it for us” is astonishing. And then the thread was just a monster scroll of people saying that’s how they got theirs.
