He was arguably America’s greatest former president, as it was only after he was freed of his duties that he could throw his weight behind diplomacy and negotiating peace.

Even then, you can argue that the Camp David Accords are the only element of Middle Eastern diplomacy to have lasted the test of time.

A sad life, and a reminder of how injustice can destroy people.

Yes, so true, once he was free of the shackles of US foreign policy, he was a great humanitarian. RIP

Tony Slattery has died. He was probably best known for Who’s Line Is It Anyway, but I had met him a couple of times at Doctor Who conventions on Merseyside. He was good friends with the couple who organised them.

A lothario who lived the high life at the expense of the taxpayer - never understood the love-in for what was (post Lazio) a very ordinary coach…

“Most of Eriksson’s debts were tax related in the UK, owing £7.25m to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC)”

I really liked Sven, seemed a nice fella. I remember being on holiday in the Canaries back in the day when England (Liverpool) beat Germany 5-1 in an time when that just didn’t happen. Not sure what I think about the financial stuff being broadcast like this. Let it lie!

Anyway, RIP.

It’s owing HMRC 7.25m while living it large that is the point - it goes to his character. “Seemed a nice fella” has to be weighted against how he actually behaved.

I get that, but it seems misplaced, at least to my sensibilities, to do that stuff while the body is still warm.

If a deeper dive on his finances is the focus, I’d like to see a piece done on how he was swindled out of 10M by a dodgy financial adviser.

Hopefully some good might come from that in the form of beefed up provision for people in the game to protect them from vultures. Something like that would seem a good reason for players to pay subs to The PFA, for example.
