I knew about his illness but I didn’t expect it would take him so soon. One of all-time greats in every sense, a genius of film and TV. I don’t feel devastated, just empty at learning this. The world is definitely a poorer, sadder place without him.
I’ll never forget watching Eraserhead on mushrooms. I thought it was the funniest thing ever.
Joan Plowright has died aged 95:
Putting rivalries aside, what a fantastic player Law was. RIP
He was Shankly’s first big discovery when he was Huddersfield manager. He did try to sign him for us but obviously United were the bigger draw at that time.
Oddly enough, my uncle met him twice. The first time was when my uncle had a trial with United. The second time was in the 1970s when they were involved in a road accident (both innocent parties). Apparently, Law recognised my uncle - they were both called Denis, so maybe the face stuck (my uncle was also a boxer, so the face may have been memorable!)
Truly a giant of football. He will be remembered long from now.
From George Sephton (Anfield stadium announcer):
I’m not a fan of many United players but Denis Law was the exception. A couple of years after he stopped playing he did some commentary work for the BBC. In those days that involved sitting on a little bench on the old TV gantry. Right outside my door. When he first turned up I remember being overwhelmed. He was a superstar. But he started talking to me like an old friend. Put me at my ease. I even looked after his son once in my room while he was doing his bit for the BBC ! I remember saying to him that Kevin Keegan was the only guy I’d ever seen who could jump as high as him for a header! And he could have come to Liverpool with Shanks !!
Another player of that era to succumb to Alzheimers.
I feel privileged to have seen Best, Charlton and Law play several times. Arguably the greatest trio of strikers ever to play together in one team in British football. Different players and personalities but just seemed to complement each other perfectly.
RIP you three.
Law was famously the most expensive British player so far when he first signed for City.
I don’t know where else to put this:
RIP.
Not necessarily a household name, but a very fine guitarist indeed.
My condolences to his family and friends.
Rest in Peace Marianne Faithfull.
A truly beautiful woman, and a voice of velvet.
I read her autobiography ‘Faithfull’ a couple of years ago. It was very moving and quite sad. Well worth a read though.
That was always a favourite of my mothers. She much preferred it to The Beatles’ version. RIP Marianne.
Me neither … a truly life-changing experience !
And she claimed to have slept with 3 of the Rolling Stones. I wonder who missed out?
The bed probably wasn’t big enough for her and all 5 of them
