The Random Football Debate Thread

Can you explain the point then.

Once more, with feeling…

An extreme opinion pulled off the internet is not the direction of public discourse.

Or you can read any of the 7 or so posts I’ve already made. An insult based on a gay man’s lack of perceived manliness and general undesirability is homophobic regardless of who it is aimed at or the context in which it used.

I’m from the generation that had to grapple with the exact same issue with the use of the F word and using gay as a general pejorative. Users would argue it wasn’t homophobic because they didn’t direct it at actual gay people, and then failed to connect the dots that it only carries weight in their mind because actual gay people are worthy of scorn and derision. It’s a baseless defense and is exactly the one Mexicans who defend the chant use.

My larger point in the story was the valid stance in Mexico that FIFA were not credible on this given the world cup they are threatening to ban them from is one held in a country where homosexuality is actually illegal, and for Muslims theoretically punishable by death. But FIFA’s lack oif credibility on the issue doesnt in fact mean that the continued use of the chant or word in a broad sense is defensible or that it isnt homophobic.

The only point I made is that “you suck asshole” is not a homophobic chant.

I haven’t read about Mexicans etc so what ever your point was about that fantastic.

We aren’t talking about the same thing

Oh dear…

What a idiot, he was lucky.

The attacker? I agree he was lucky the stewards didn’t mob him and police charge him with assault.

A grown man being unable to hear the words “Come on Spurs” without flying into a fury is a giant red flag.

This is what happens with fat ugly bastards in their 40s spend too much time drinking before a match.

Sorry if that’s stereotyping but they all do look like that

I’m afraid in the modern day if you are in with rival fans and you shout out for your own team you will be lucky to get out of there without getting hurt. I’ve done it years ago and got spat on and abused.

This is true.

I’ve sat in the home section when we have been the away team.

But in those circumstances you keep your mouth shut or you will get abused, physically and verbally.

Imagine a United fan sat in the kop…. Wouldn’t end well would it.

Just to put it out there from the gay community I don’t think many of us suck arseholes.

I won’t go into detail but it’s not one of the sexual activities I’ve come across often.

Also Mascot is right, something you see opined on the internet that sounds nonsense usually is most of us even on the more caring leftie side can see it as complete nonsense and history is littered with such opinions.

Love the supporter of Oxford United on BBC 5Live just now saying the money paid for players is obsessed about.

“Take a £100m Picasso and put that in the middle of Wembley, you’re not going to get 80,000 coming along to see what it can do”

Then he says, “You could pay £100m for a stud horse these days but could you have a chat with it? No, you couldn’t”

Best caller ever.

I may be a dumb foreigner but I don’t see his point.

He’s really saying that it’s cultural snobbery. There’s no outcry about these high sums paid for art or horses and yet they don’t provide anywhere near the same level of joy/excitement to as many people as elite footballers do.
