The Random Football Debate Thread

Just came here to post this, so instead I’ll just add my huge respect for this lad.

They would probably get death threats back home if they did. They’re from countries where it’s illegal to be LGBT.

More players who come out and show support the better it is

Seen tthat PSG player gueye refuse to play due to a random number. It’s honestly so backwards, religion or not. Going off topic but I can’t respect such a religion that has those ideals.

People have said he had a choice and that’s great and all but it’s a uniform and plenty of people wear them in their job roles.

The entire league participated in support of some anti-homophobia association by displaying all the shirt numbers in rainbow colours. That PSG chose to participate is by itself noteworthy given the ownership, but Gueye was absent and it is being reported as a personal decision because of the move. Notably he missed their game during the same exercise last season as well.

Honestly, it’s a bit of a tricky situation about how much humanity and tolerance should you give to intolerance. There are calls for him being sanctioned, and while for me personally its a pretty easy line to draw to say fuck him, I think sanctioning him is probably counter productive.

I wouldn’t sanction him but I wouldn’t excuse it eithier or try and make up excuses, he has made a choice if clubs and supporters are put off by that then it’s his bed he chose to lay.

I’d fire him but that’s just me.

I’d fire him aswell but funny feeling the PSG owners believe similar. I hope that he is blacklisted from any respectable club in the future in regards to transferring.

But that in itself is tricky.
Yes, stamp out intolerance and discrimination at every opportunity. But sacking someone because of their beliefs (not sure if Gueye has a religious objection) will also be seen as intolerant.
I don’t think any third party would agree with the sacking.

Thats a side point. Fair dues to Jake Daniels, immense bravery and another attempt to rid the sport of bigotry.

Gueye shouldn’t be sacked but he shouldn’t be paid for the week if he’s not going to turn out for the game at the end of it.

Why not let him turn out with his number in the normal colour… let everyone else play with the rainbow colours so that the whole world can see the issue here instead of it being tucked away as a snippet in some obscure newspaper or like.
Awareness is what matters and bringing this issue to the widest audience possible is what will generate positive change

I understand the complexity and that it may not be legal even to fire him for it. I’d certainly be asking HR about it though.

If all else failed I’d make sure he’s not offered a new contract with the club.

The mental gymnastics to defend/excuse Gueye is wild (not referring to anything here, but elsewhere).

I read the headline about Jake Daniels yesterday, but I didn’t realise he’s only 17. Brave lad.

It’s not just an issue of his beliefs though. His actions, by being publicly antagonistic to anti-homophobia efforts is creating a hostile work environment. And if your beliefs impact the things you can and cannot do, then great. Inclusion means creating space for that to be honored. When your beliefs impact the dignity and rights of others, then we’re talking about something completely different.

I agree 100%

Should Newcastles new owners therefore not have been allowed into the game.
Their beliefs impact on others.
