What about Roy of the Rovers???

I remember hearing about this on TalkShite, but always thought they were taking the piss and used it as a long running joke - never knew it was genuine

Who was the biggest flop?

Gotta be between Coutinho and Hazard, one of them. In the latter case, there were injuries and that certainly played a part. On paper, Hazard made more sense than Coutinho. Could be Coutinho, although he did do a bit more for Barca than Hazard for Real. Griezmann also didn’t make sense stylistically, but at least he performed to a certain level and got decent numbers at problematic times.

Hazard by far. Felix a close 2nd.

How so?

I’d add Lukaku to Chelsea to that - massive fail.

Cheeky bugger just quoted me in time before I edited it out.

I thought the article was naming all the 100m+ signings that’d flopped.

For the fees you could actually argue a case for all of them being flops, with the exclusion of Bale & Mbappe.

Just saw Pogba on the list - he’s up near the top of the flops.

Because despite how much shit he got he was actually successful, and contributed significantly to those successes. Some his latter medals he did little to earn, but he has 4 CL medals that he contributed to, including the winning goal in 2 and a key penalty in a shoot out win in another.

You missed the rest of the convo - the list isn’t top 100m Euro flops. It’s just a list of the players who cost that much.

Ah, sometimes I dont follow along too good

Assume Viborg fans rioting over missing out on the Conference League.

I heard the term ‘soccer sandals’ last night.
Wtf?!
You can’t play football in flip flops!

From who?

America doesn’t have anything like the monoculture we grew up with, but what it does have is a set of norms around each subculture that are expected to be very tightly adhered to. Understanding that people do not just participate in an activity here, but adopt it as part of their personality was one of the most difficult part for me about moving here.

Here, surfers arent people who enjoy surfing and get out in the water whenever they can. They are people who wear surf branded clothing, listen to white-man reggae or “punk”, probably have long hair (good surfers can get away with subverting expectations with a buzz cut) and likely smoke weed regularly.

That is relevant because “slides” are just part of the kit for “soccer” players here. It’s part of the off field uniform, to the point that if you have a 10 year old who wants to join the team these would be part of the kit you’d have to buy them (assuming they dont have them) just as much as the shin pads or boots would be.

Weirdly, they were mentioned in ‘The Dropout’.

I thought I’d misheard at first and it was something to do with socks and sandals.

Maybe the whole paraphernalia thing comes from the fact that US sports; Am Football, Baseball, Ice Hockey, all require a lot of gear. Exception being Basketball.
Or it’s a function of an overactive marketing driven capitalism.
Or both.
