The Referees or The Twelfth Man

If in doubt don’t give nowt! What does inconclusive mean? If you are not sure even after VAR involvement give either a free kick or nothing.

Ok…
Your response was a bit dramatic though?
Someone expressing an opinion on how the game will be reffed vs we are definitely losing?

On that basis the idea was to stick with the on field decision.

This…

Putting the two phrases alongside each other from your post and mine @mattyhurst might be the easiest way to note the subtle difference, and by default, the opposite interpretations. Never mentioned I expect us to get beat at all. Never mentioned Sand Dune Oliver will fuck us over. Never mentioned the PL will prevent us going 11 points clear…
What I did say… They won’t want that to happen…!
Just like every Cheaters fan, Utd fan, Chelsea and Arsenal fan won’t want it to happen either… From an entertaining, exciting and competitive perspective, as a product - Howie and his puppet masters won’t want it to happen either…!
Given the present scenario, we could be 20points clear at the end of January… and the PL could be wrapped up.
However… if we do go 11 points clear at the weekend… That could be the time to monitor for anyone with a suspicious mind (me), to monitor how fair we are refereed from this point forward, so the 20point gap does not materialise…!
I think what my post was guilty of… was building the tension up, and added anticipation for this weekends match… how long have ALL of us been waiting to have the Cheaters in such a stranglehold eh…

Issue for me here communication. The referee and var sit in a vacuum closed off from everyone viewing the game.
If they communicated the reasoning behind a decision like this people would be more accepting of it.

It wont happen though, it just exposes how “useless” they are

Which was the wrong one by referring to VAR suggest that they were not sure it was the right decision! Giving a penalty without hesitation is a severe infringement punishment for the our team but when the time came to take as decisive a course of action for the Lallana tackle ah but he is a nice guy and he played for us I don’t give a toss he should have got a red even Roy Keane and co thought so.

I can’t remember who on here has made the argument, but it would be the exact opposite in that sense, to “let” us have one season they can then point to as PGMOL being clean and unbiased.

We are more likely to get occasional decisions in our favour.
In matches that are already won.

I made that point in 2019-20, but not sure if you are referring to someone saying something similar more recently.

Nah all the posts about a ref we haven’t had appointed yet.

The idea of sticking with the on field decision if it isn’t a big enough error is so obviously nonsense.

A podcast the other reminded me of the insanity of this ruling. City v Chelsea FA Cup semi final.

The ball is struck towards the City goal and hits a City play on the arm and goes out. Michael Oliver ‘doesn’t see’ it and gives a goal kick.

VAR get involved because it’s hit the lads arm, but decide that it can’t be a pen because his arm wasn’t in an unnatural position. So the stick with the onfield decision of Goal kick.

They have just spent three minutes watching replays and debating it, watching it flick off the City player, and of the three decisions they could go with (goal kick, penalty or corner), they end up settling - through the application of their protocols - on the one it literally can’t be.

Yeah, that is an edge case that produces dumb outcomes and they should revisit it. No one wants VAR that is so obtrusive that it overrules decisions on throw ins or GK/corners, but it feels like seeing as they were looking at the handball anyway they should have been able to say “no penalty, but in looking at we saw it should have been a corner instead of a GK.” The problem is VAR look at everything and that opens up VAR to being able to overturn literally every decision a ref makes no matter how trivial, and that is very clearly the exact opposite of what people say they want from VAR.

Finding the right protocol that produces the outcome you think makes most sense in one specific situation but does not have the knock on effect of producing a LOT of really undesirable outcomes across a range of other situations is really hard. There is a lot wrong with VAR, but I really think people drastically underestimate the challenge of finding the right balance between what VAR should and should not intervene on. Then too often when complaining about what happened in one specific incident they fail to put that in the context of what VAR would look like if the process used to give you your preferred outcome right now was applied globally to all incidents.

With that said, none of this was the issue here. Here it was just Oliver saying that from the footage he had he didnt see enough to disagree with it being in the box. There is no protocol change that changes this outcome if that is Oliver’s perspective.

A little while back one of my friend’s kids was about 12 and started getting into what they called “EDM” from hearing it on his video games. I liked the direction, but was horrified at how shit everything he was hearing was so I took him on a club classics history tour, this included. He was mind blown that something this cool and “electronic” was made as long ago as when I was his age.

I ignored the implied age related insult, and celebrated the win.

Well the remix is about 15 minutes.

I’m reading a 700 page book on the Resistance I don’t have time for lengthy posts.

There’s a 15 min version of ‘I Feel Love’ that pre dates BM by about five years and is equally ground breaking.
