Ensuring throw-ins are taken from the right spot would be an idea…Pretty sure Robbo ran forward 10 metres or more on Saturday after it had gone out by the corner flag. Maybe the linesman should quickly put foam on the correct spot or just stand by it until the throw is taken.
The change I would make to offside is a really simple one. Put a time limit of how long the check can be. If you are spending three minutes trying to work out if a players toenail is offside, then it’s level - play on.
VAR has introduced the idea that offside is a objective matter. It isn’t and it’s never going to be. It’s also de facto changed the rule. You are supposed to be offside if you are gaining an advantage from being offside. No-one is gaining any advantage from being millimetres offside.
So quick check, twenty seconds or so, and then call it. If you are still can’t tell, then call it onside and play on.
I’d agree on time frame but I think revert to the on field decision. Though I think that for everything. If it can’t be decided in 30 seconds or 2-3 clips then it’s not a penalty say or it is.
Explain this contradiction…

Edit: I see what I’ve done. I’ve written subjective when I meant objective ![]()
Ive spent a week arguing with one of my colleagues in Argentina over something she has produced. I then found out that the word cleave can mean either of two completely opposite meanings and so she was in fact right the entire time (in her third language)
We had him for the cup game. I was quite impressed with him. Probably never see him again now.
hes new to the job and will learn from his mistakes…
I immediately remembered the penalty they were given at home against Wolves in 2021/22 - and the carbon copy of that incident in the same season at Goodison Park that wasn’t given because City’s player was at fault.
On Football Rules website, external, it asks the question: “A player prevents the ball from going into their own goal with their hand/arm but does not deliberately handle the ball and does not make their body unnaturally bigger?”
The answer is: “This is not a handball.”
Its been a real mess and loads of people are confused by it. One of the sites I saw got confused thinking the rule required a ref to give a handball foul even if it wasnt deemed to meet the regular handball criteria just because it stopped a goal bound effort.
The ref made the right decision though, right Pep.
That was a real “sorry, but not sorry” apology.
Well he acts like a 12 year old.
