The Referees or The Twelfth Man

Indeed. The team with one of the most number of actions inside the opponent’s penalty area, with some of the quickest forwards in the game… 0 penalties.

The team that has won the PL fair play table for the last 5 years. Tierney believes they ought to be the most heavily penalised in the division.

Thanks for this. It seems that his issues with us have come this season: in 3 games, he gave us half of all yellow cards he ever gave us in a total of 16 games.

Yeah, 0 penalties given to us in 16 games. Given how often we attack and play in the opposing box, it’s a surprising stat indeed…

The club should compile evidence of bias (which is staggering) and make an official complaint. Make sure he never officiates a Liverpool game again.

Before anyone says this is unrealistic, it’s what Ferguson used to do all the time. We need to start acting like a big club, and stop being pushed around.

Can you imagine Ferguson, if Utd had been on the receiving end of those decisions on Sunday?

So last season Pickford’s wasn’t a red because there was an offside. This season Kane’s wasn’t a red because Robbo avoided getting his leg broken. What’s the bullshit excuse they’ll invent next? Not a red because it wasn’t a compound fracture? Can’t be a red if the player’s still technically alive, even if they are now on life support? Can’t be a pen because we were too quick for the opposition? Can’t be a pen for us because it could disturb the space time continuum?

Data taken from Soccerbase…

Anthony Taylor after 13 games… 53 Yellows + 3 Reds issued
Paul Tierney after 13 games… 53 Yellows + 1 Red issued
David Coote after 10 games… 53 Yellows + 2 Reds issued
If I had a suspicious mind I would think they have a side bet going on there…!
Others…
Jon Moss after 10 games… 24 Yellows + 3 Reds
Mike Dean after 11 games… 35 Yellows + 0 Reds
Michael Oliver after 14 games… 43 Yellows + 1 Red
Martin Atkinson after 11 games… 26 Yellows + 2 Reds

Some rising stars of the refereeing world we’ve got to look forward to…
John Brooks - 1 game… 5 Yellows + 0 Reds
Tony Harrington - 1 game… 2 Yellows + 0 Reds
Michael Salisbury - 1 game… 6 Yellows + 0 Reds

When referees are supposed to guarantee same standard of officiating across the entire league, then surely the bookings could be an indicator to support or dismiss this claim…!!!
Leaves ya wondering how David Coote has issued more than twice the amount of yellows than Jon Moss over 10 games.!
When looking at the entire list of referees… by cards alone, massive anomilies are there to be seen

So in 10 games he’s given out 43 yellow cards and no red cards, an average of 4.75 yellow cards and no red cards a game.

We’ve been top of the fair play league for 5 years straight, by far the cleanest team in the league and well below the league average, yet he’s still given us 3.33 yellow cards and a 0.33 red cards per game.

Wonder why?
Could it be that he has an agenda?

That doesn’t even scratch the surface in looking at how many decisions have gone against us as Kane not getting a red and Jota not getting a penalty were bigger influences on the score than Keita getting carded for pointing out he got elbowed etc!

Actually, it’s even more stark than that. In 10 games Tierney has given 32 yellows and 0 reds to both teams.

In the 3 games he’s ref’d involving Liverpool he’s handed out 21 yellows and 1 red. 10 yellows and a red to Liverpool and 11 yellows to the opposition (Spurs, Everton and City). What is clear is that he is disproportionately card happy in games involving Liverpool.

He averages 3.2 yellows/game for all fixtures not involving Liverpool but when it comes to Liverpool he’s at 7 yellows/game (and a red).

Compare that to the two big London derbies he’s ref’d this season. Spurs v Chelsea and Arsenal v Chelsea. He dished out a total of 4 yellow cards (2/game).

It’s almost as if, whenever he’s officiating a Liverpool game, he has to make sure he’s front and centre of it.

[Edited to add]
Here’s a list:

Games involving (number of games)/cards per game

Liverpool (3)/7
Everton (1)/7*
Southampton (1)/6
Newcastle (3)/4.33
Tottenham (3)/4
Man City (3)/3.66
Leicester (2)/3.5
Chelsea (4)/3.25
Man U (1)/3
Arsenal (1)/3
West Ham (1)/3
Leeds (2)/2.5
Burnley (1)/2

*In the game against us.

Average cards per club per game, ranked in order of bookings/game (from ‘cleanest’ to ‘dirtiest’)

Burnley 1 yellow/game (1 game) - 1 for their opponents
Leeds 1.5/game (2 games) - 1 for their opponents
United 1/game (1 game) - 2 for their opponents
Chelsea 1/game (4 games) - 2.25 for their opponents
West Ham 2/game (1 game) - 1 for their opponents
Arsenal 3/game (1 game) - 0 for their opponents
Leicester 2/game (2 games) - 1.5 for their opponents
City 2/game (3 games) - 1.66 for their opponents
Tottenham 1.66/game (3 games) - 2.33 for their opponents
Newcastle 2.33/game (3 games) - 2 for their opponents
Southampton 3/game (1 game) - 3 for their opponents
Everton 4/game (1 game) - 3 for their opponents
Liverpool 3.33/game (plus a red) (3 games) - 3.66 for their opponents

So basically games involving Burnley are the cleanest and games involving Liverpool are the dirtiest.

It also demonstrates how differently each referee interprets the rule book…
Yet the rulebook is supposed to be idiot proof so all decisions become common… They even introduced VAR to bring consistency to their decision making.
Unless of course… these guys like to exert their influence whenever it suits and against whomever they choose… but they wouldn’t do that would they… I mean these referees shun the limelight don’t they… surely when they are in front of 50,000 fans and a world-wide TV audience they won’t want to grab the headlines from the match… surely not…!

Probably also means, no matter how blatant the next one is adjudged when he officiates our games… He won’t be giving LFC a penalty for a very long time…!
