The Referees or The Twelfth Man

Just another thought with VAR…

So far this has been run by the same old boys club that run (or ruin) the on pitch officiating. That’s no way to audit an organisation.

Would it not make sense to have VAR run by a completely separate organisation? Until this weekend I was unaware that referees are free to work for another association. Couldn’t we outsource the VAR to another European referees association? It’s all done remotely so there isn’t even a requirement for travel.

It would but that’s never gonna happen, which is why the supply between VAR and on field needs to be cut off entirely.

The only thing VAR was good for and no one could argue…was tight offside calls, well now they’ve lost all credibility on that too. What is VAR actually being used for other than the ref checking a replay on a pitchside monitor whilst having another ref in his ear clearly questioning/influencing his decision?

As Carra said on MNF yesterday, they’re telling the on field ref WHY their decision is wrong…i.e re-refereeing games. We don’t need that shit.

I think that’s a subset of point one.

The point is the information given by PGMOL is absurd to the point that it isn’t credible.

When the goal was scored I peeled of round the room, giving it the big one, and my eight year old son said ‘dad - it’s offside’.

My eight year old son is better at Darren England’s job than Darren England.

I am really struggling to believe that Darren England, and everyone else at Stockley Park, did not realise that the onfield decision was offside. Because the scale of incompetence, across several people, that this would involve is off the scale.

Premier League officials for matchweek eight confirmed

It’s that dreaded time of the week again, Reds - Premier League officials for the next set of fixtures have just been announced.

For Liverpool’s trip to Brighton the list goes something like this:

Referee - Anthony Taylor

Assistants - Gary Beswick, Adam Nunn

Fourth official - Craig Pawson

VAR - Chris Kavanagh

Assistant VAR - Matthew Wilkes

And in case you’re wondering, it would appear Darren England and Dan Cook have been dropped from Premier League duties again after their role in Saturday’s error.

Is Macca gonna be slapped with a ban for mentioning playing against 12?

You couldn’t make this up

Would not be surprised.

Why has he been charged?

I’d just seek legal redress if he is.

Not going change until we do.

Under Riley they went silent and did nothing, I think I prefer that at least it showed some guilt. This lot don’t seem to think they’ve done anything wrong and that has started since Webb came in.

I might have to take cover here, but has Taylor not actually been ok in recent games for us?

Well Chris Kav was last week but that’s when he was at Anfield on the pitch.

Hooper will be the VAR at Bournemouth v. Everton.

Lucky for them

He might have been decent if there hadn’t been all the kerfuffle on Saturday, I’m afraid we will get stamped on for daring to protest and get his colleagues banned he will punish us in some way or other I must admit I was depressed when I saw he was reffing the Brighton game

I think this warning shot across the bows from LFC hierarchy, will have the officials and Alpha Webb looking over his/their shoulders from now on. Jurgen is no longer a protesting voice in the wilderness on these matters any more… he has the might of the whole of the Boston Legal System behind him.
For all we know, when Jurgen was fined that vast sum of money… maybe, just maybe, he said to John Henry that he has had enough…! In like, what is the point in carrying on when the game is operated and run by cheats… Maybe, it has spurred JH to act from now on, and with having a cast-iron legitimate reason to act… they have done so.
I also believe this might just be the thin end of the wedge… which will be used to broaden the discussions re the charges against The Cheaters etc…
It is also to be remembered, if LFC re-iterate their stance that an apology won’t wash and will not suffice… It then surely becomes the problem for the PGMOL to find a compromise, or total solution. Failing offering anything more than a ‘shit happens’ retort to us again, then JH would win the entire fanbase over in one fell swoop if he nails these fuckers good and proper.

Not much to fuck up there

He’ll be fine. Neither of those teams are Man City’s business.

This is a guy I don’t particularly like… but he has put a line in his thread, which references Alpha Webb perfectly and made me chuckle… Highlighted it in bold here

‘That’s mind-boggling’ - Richard Keys sends message to Howard Webb after Liverpool VAR farce

Liverpool have been at the centre of the VAR controversy following the incorrect decision to rule out Luis Diaz’s goal

Richard Keys has urged the Premier League to embrace VAR specialists in light of the controversial decision that wronged Liverpool against Tottenham Hotspur.

The microscope has been firmly placed over the English top flight, their use of technology and the PGMOL, who are now under scrutiny following [Luis Diaz’s ]strike in the first half of the [Reds ]defeat in North London.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were down to 10 men when the Colombian raced through, firing into the bottom corner, but his celebrations were halted by the assistant referee’s flag. There was a check from VAR but, as revealed in a later statement from the refereeing governing body, there was a “significant human error” from Stockley Park in relaying that to those on the field.

Keys has called on PGMOL chief Howard Webb to be tougher with those making the mishaps.

“Refs should be allowed to concentrate on getting better at what they do on the field and junk VAR responsibilities,” he wrote in his blog.

"I’ve said this before - VAR should be staffed by people like Chris Foy, Mark Halsey, Peter Walton - X-refs (sic) who know the laws and can be trained to understand the skill of watching the game on tv as a pro. We need full-time specialist VAR operators.

"Right now people like Foy and Walton are being sent out every Monday to make excuses for a catalogue of errors committed previous weekend. What a waste of time.

"Howard Webb (showbiz showbiz showbiz) has got to get a grip. Already this season the PGMOL has admitted to mistakes on 14 occasions.

"That’s mind-boggling - 14 times already. And that’s not to mention others that they should’ve admitted. I welcomed Webb’s return to our game. I genuinely thought he’d make a positive difference. He hasn’t.

“Webb has got to get tough and fire some of the people he inherited that simply aren’t good enough. If you don’t know who they are I can help there Howard. I probably hear more about the frustrations of the good people than you do.”

After the mistake from the officials, it became known that Darren England and Dan Cook, VAR and Assistant VAR for the clash between Liverpool and Spurs, had officiated in the UAE 48 hours before.

England and Cook were assisting Michael Oliver in the Gulf for Sharjah vs Al-Ain on Thursday. Their attendance was approved by Webb with the view that their involvement would not impact their roles in the Premier League at the weekend.

However, Keys took umbrage with the decision to allow officials to take the whistle in matches overseas. He continued: "The recent habit of allowing officials to ref overseas has got to stop. Why is this happening? Is it so the boys can earn an extra few quid?

"It can’t be anything else. That’s not a good reason. Pay them more at home.

"That Michael Oliver was in the UAE on Thursday and therefore couldn’t ref Saturday was a disgrace. As we know, England and Cook were with him.

“If Oliver was too tired to ref (he was 4th at Spurs) why were England and Cook asked to work VAR? Is this job not considered to be as important as taking the whistle? I think we’ve found out now that it is.”

Hopefully off the back of this, managers and players will speak ,respectfully but honestly about the game they have just played without fear of retribution from the FA,PGMOL etc.
