The Room 101 thread

Scotland.

In hindsight, it may not have been a good idea to build a subdivision/estate right next to a bayou/marsh area.

It’s never fully explained but generally it’s considered to be somewhere between Glenfinnan and Dufftown in Scotland (which is a pretty massive range).

There is an actual Jacobite steam train that runs from Fort William to Mallaig.
It travels across the Glenfinnan Viaduct…
Also known as The Harry Potter Bridge
This is where the second and third books were filmed
Chambers of Secrets & Prisoner of Azkaban
Remember the scene with Arthur Weasley’s Ford Anglia swooping around the Hogwarts Express…!
Ermmmm… so I have been told by a friend by the way…
no never watched those films ever!!

Near where I live they’re building more and more homes on flood plain land. One estate was built there only after they’d had pumps running 24 hours a day for weeks pumping water into a nearby river. They then built the land up with truck loads of what looked like hard-core. The fields on the opposite side of the river flood each time it rains. I wonder what’s going on around the foundations of the new homes?

It’s actually really worrying when you look at both how and where new housing is being built in this country, let alone if we even need more housing or merely better distribution of existing homes…. but I suppose that’s more for the UK Politics thread than here.

The lesson there is that the river will return, just a matter of time.

Near where I live, more and more land is being restricted as not viable for building - even in places that were viable previously.

You’d think places that share the floodplain with large amphibious carnivores might be a little more cautious with that overlap.

Yes

And the poor mugs who buy houses on land such as this will be left with an unsellable worthless property and be flooded out annually.

No lemonade stand necessary: Siblings, 14 and 9, make fortune bitcoin mining in school holidays (msn.com)

The headline should really read. Rich kids use fathers money and expertise to make more money betting on cryptocurrency.

Just imagine a scenario where your parents allowed to to have $3K a month electricity bill. Or when you were 9 and 14 your father giving you a “loan” for a business. Or I shit you not $90,000 of graphics cards in their garage (Let alone other hardware). Oh did I mention that their dad is also a wallstreet investment banker? Try getting 100K loan from the bank to build a rig to mine cryptocurrency.

Many news outlets portray this as some kind of American dream. If you have the right entrepreneurial spirt you could be sucessfull. Look even these children can do it. Turning blind eye to capital investment, ongoing operational costs, high fluctuations in cryptocurrency, and its improbable they were not guided almost entirely by their father.

Falling over and breaking a bone. This time just the point of the hip torn ‘off’. Fucked up my time at my son’s wedding, which went very nicely btw. I hobbled around then went to Emergences. Getting used to the situation is very difficult when your as inadaptable as I am in my ‘old’ age.

Bugger, happy limping! One of my cousins married a gentleman of extensive drinking history. On their wedding day, a game of rugby broke out. The groom took his own dad out breaking both his legs.

Did mine in during a game larking about with my daughters boy friend, wasn’t drunk (didn’t drink so I could help others with transport ended up not helping anyway) or rugby but someone charged us whilst I was in the air trying to catch a box of goodies.
Got crutches so in open space can get around ok different story in the house and on stairs also it’s not too painful either which is good.
I’m a good limper and moaner so no worries there.

Reminds me of those articles you’ll see going round every once in a while about how some couple got on the property ladder by the time they were 25. Typically goes;

  • stopped buying takeaway coffee every day
  • made lunch at home instead of buying it
  • each have a job that pays at least three times times the national average
  • gave up Amazon Prime
  • set up a budget for the weekly shop
  • parents lent them the deposit and probably won’t ask it to be repaid
  • limited to one takeaway a month
  • bought a second hand BMW instead of brand new Audi
  • gave up gym membership and took up running instead

You too can do this if you just follow these simple savings rules.

How was your Évian tour???

I’m not going now, I would be too much of an annoyance. I was supposed to be driving but that’s too dangerous.

Oh man, I feel for you, I really do. Here’s to you getting well soon.

Thanks!
It really isn’t as bad as it sounds just a real bummer. I have good movement of the leg, can support weight on it when it’s straight but need crutches to get above a snails pace. Still will need 3-4 weeks to repare. Just need to rest up. Only get pain with certain movements and Paracetamol was enough. Doctor said pain would effectively be gone after 3 days and is almost gone (except if I push too much). Biggest problem is anxiety not wanting pain and not being able to carry anything more than 1kg.
I get really anxious over these things as I suffered daily pain for over 15 years (pseudo rhumatoid arthritis in every joint due to Lyme desease) which destroyed my confidence.

A good friend of mine has Lyme disease and you are right it is an absolute bitch of a disease. She has mobility issues and likewise her confidence has been shattered. Her husband is an absolute diamond and has supported her 100% through it. Hope the hip gets better. soon.

Lyme disease is an excellent candidate for Room 101.
