The Rugby Union Thread

It’ll be funny for the rest of the six nations, at least, to watch England get thoroughly bummed in Paris

Poor baby giving a shit for 70 years of this shit if not more.

Then again at a 10 year old getting a fandom of Liverpool wasn’t wise.

Injuries told in the end I think.
Just missed that little bit of organisation I think.

Wales win one at last. Played well first half.

England getting cut to pieces during this yellow card. Total shift in the match

Yet they scored a try.
Incredible match whatever one thinks.

England is so much better today than they have been all tournament. Their breakdown play is like another team entirely

Great recognition by Dupont…carved open with the boot

What an ending…

Hell of a game that. I could not believe the ending. That was nuts.

Truth is England should have won that.

Felt right it ended the way it did, last kick etc. It’s been a pleasure watching those games in the pub today.

Yeah I’ve seen it. First one I’ve seen outlining the scale of the hole the WRU dug themselves.

They should be ashamed. Before this I had felt I hadn’t seen enough detail to start calling out individuals in the WRU. Now I want them gone, today. Putting those people in charge was criminal.

I take two issues with it

  1. it makes a solid case about the flaws of the people at the top currently, but the funding cuts were pre existent to them as was the feeling Wales could not afford 4 pro regions. There is a lot of criticism but nothing in the way of solution other than to go back to something we cannot afford.

  2. he’s got a gap in his analysis, poetically maybe attributable to him being a “Welsh” person not actually from wales. He talks about the impact of losing Swansea or Carmarthen as if the players who previously came from the regions would be lost. What that misses is that those players historically produced by Carmarthen were supplemented in large part by players from areas that didn’t get the attention Carmarthen did and had to travel there for the coaching/games. It rankled a bit coming from one these ignored areas to hear about the supposed breadth of coverage of the coaching that existed in the halcyon days. But this isn’t a just bitch. It’s a question of why if at our peak it was ok for talented kids from fishguard, aberwystwth, cardigan, pembroke etc to have to go to Llanelli to get this level of engagement with the WRU coaching, why is it problematic for a kid from Swansea to make the much shorter and easier trip to to Llanelli? Sure, ideally you have more resources covering a broader area but see point 1.

My big take away was the scale of funding cuts to the youth program. That’s at Nigel Walker’s feet.

But also in response to your thoughts. I’ve been torn on losing a region. It cuts down on pathways and top level coaching. I honestly don’t want it to happen.

Yes there’s a funding issue, we cannot afford 4 competitive regions, but it really grates with me that those same regions go and buy in whatever they can afford. That’s not wholly their fault, they’re forced to survive from season to season rather than developing the next group of youngsters.

I am convinced the people managing the WRU now are finance managers taking advice from accountants. That never works for long and the WRU is evidence of it. They wasted the success we had.

They are a bunch of Tories in charge of a union.
