The Spursy Thread

What happens with the Europa Conference League Game now? As far I can see they can not qualify for the next round anymore.

Rennes have won the group and Vitesse will stay on second.

Imagine the ridiculous scenario that a PL club would be compelled to playing two games on the same day?

Oh…wait

We’ll smash them either way.

Harry Kane would assure them that he would help them the next time they’re stranded.

Any win for Spurs puts them through on goal difference

Isn’t head to head more important than goal difference?

Not with the last round of rule changes. That is the next tie-breaker.

It’s the simod sports shoe trophies of UEFA. Is it really worth the fuss of trying to reschedule? Spurs should just concede, fuck it off and move on to trying to claw back a 4th spot in the league that, even for as shit as they’ve been, is not out their reach if Conte can pull them together.

I don’t think it is, two extra February weekday games for the chance to get two more weekday games after that. But UEFA will not be pleased to have it scrubbed.

If you are a smaller team on the up, and you qualify for this competition and you play it, to gain experience in Europe, and hopefully use it as a springboard to bigger things, I can almost see the point. I’m being charitable, as there’s too much football, and the tourney is a joke, but I can almost see the working on that basis.

If you played in the CL final just a few years ago, it is a mighty fall, and does you no good whatsoever. Your main job is to finish as high as possible in the league to get back to the CL, or at worst, the Europa. For such teams this tournament has no purpose.

What would the sanction be if a club qualified but refused to play it? No prize money, obviously, and to make up the numbers there are always more teams further down to invite.

But would there be any other sanction?

I have no idea, but I’d think it would be too enormous to contemplate it being a reality. It wouldnt just be UEFA, but the FA who would come down on them.

However, the modern squad rules do give clubs fairly wide berth to send out much weakened squads in a way that minimizes impact on the actual first team.

Tottenham’s postponed Europa Conference League game with Rennes will not be rescheduled, says Uefa.

Oh that’ll be a win then for spurs…fall in poo, come out smelling of roses…

Ban them from European competitions and ban all other Non C/L winners (from the 18/18 season) English teams for 5 years.

Automatic loss for Spurs and that’s them out of Europe.

So they forefit a game and get rewarded? That makes no sense - they should be made to play on through the knockout stages all the way to the final

Or hand back any revenue gained from the exploits

An interesting, and often overlooked, fact about European competitions is the coefficient points. Teams can huff and puff all they like to get top 4 and they will end up in pot 3 or 4 facing Munich and PSG, get stuffed and all the conversation will be about how finishing 4th would be better so they can concentrate on league so that they can finish 4th… Rinse, repeat.

The Europa Conference carries the same coefficient as the Europa proper and its against weaker teams. If English teams, managers and media weren’t so parochial and in such a rush for short term glory they might have figured out that European competition other than the Champions League can have its uses.

I bet Spurs are really gutted, now they’re out of that competition.

It is not clear they are out yet. Very odd for UEFA to announce it is not going to be played, but not announce what the resolution is.
