The Steven Gerrard Thread

Gotta disagree on that, in Szobs role he would have far more freedom to get around the pitch, win the ball, assist, score, arrive late in the box.

It is a more orthodox box to box role, whereas Macca’s role is more disciplined. But hey ho everyone is entitled to their opinion :kissing_heart:

I think his adventurous nature w.r.t passes etc would be better served playing in a slightly withdrawn #8. Yes , it would have required some positional discipline but who’s to say Gerrard won’t pick that up.

Szob still ends up deep but gets into positions just begging for the right pass or shot from range and that is where Stevie shines or did do

It’s things like this that make me feel as though he’s overrated. It’s completely hyperbolic.

In his day he was unbeatable. But his day didn’t come as often as people like to pretend it did. His contribution was more often like current day Salah, where he produces enough magic every now and then to win us some games, but there are so many which just pass him by.

He was capable of far more than the likes of Henderson and Milner for example, but the latter two delivered a higher level more consistently.

Neither. I am perfectly aware of what watching Gerrard was like, although I’ll give you the first five years of the millennium as getting to watch games wasn’t that easy.

I’d say yes and no, because it wasn’t just a Rafa thing. Even in the Rodgers era he was often just drifting out of his role and leaving gaps.

I can only judge based on the Gerrard as his career panned out, not the Gerrard as his career would have been under the coaching of Jürgen. I don’t know how well he would have fit into our team on that basis. I know he would probably have put in more match-winning performances than Henderson, but I don’t know that he would have been better at carrying out the match instructions, especially where it came to supporting Alexander-Arnold, for example.

I 100% agree with that. I think if I ever got to see him play in this current team but in the place of Szoboszlai I might change my position on him.

Out of curiosity, is there a way to check what odds were being offered for Slot at that time?

February 2021? Slot wouldn’t have been on anybody’s radar.

You would have had to walk into a bookies and ask them for a price.

We will never know what the ceiling is for Gerrard if only he played with players that were consistently at his level of passion. To me, he is a great player but what stood out was his attitude and passion. You hardly read news about him doing shit outside of football unlike some prima donna’s and to me, the ordinary boy made good is typical of the Liverpool story. That is why I love Hendo so much too but Gerrard has capabilities on the field that Hendo doesn’t have. On paper if Gerrard was captain in place of Hendo for example, he will definitely bring us more glories but it’s all guesses and we will never know for sure.

The differences is that he wouldn’t be supporting Trent, Klopp would have players supporting Gerrards role not Trents.

What is uncanny is the variety of passing techniques both of them have no one comes close, De Bruyne is close as he sees the pass and puts the ball on sixpence but he lacks the variety of Stevie & Trent.

I’m not talking about supporting an individual player per se. I’m talking about the roles they would play in the system. I don’t think Jürgen would change it that much just for one particular player. It’s not like one would say that it wasn’t part of Wijnaldum’s role to provide support for Robertson either.

He could pass and score like KDB, but was stronger, faster, could tackle better, was a better leader etc.

That’s not hyperbole. I think there’s actually a tendency for recency bias. I watched pretty much every game Gerrard played. Apart from the time with Alonso and a couple of years with Suarez, he was carrying the team on his shoulders

I found the irony of Liew describing something as lacking in meaning and joy quite delicious.

Sounds like most of his writing.

Hopefully Stevie gets another job and builds it up again. If he wants it.

He did great at Rangers. Not so good at Villa - who are struggling right now, relatively speaking. Then he went to the Saudi desert.

When I see the likes of Lampard continually getting jobs, after many more failures than Gerrard, it is baffling.

If Stevie wants to continue to work in football I wish him well.

He did alright with Villa atleast initially. Absolutely went to pieces once his assistant left.

To a large degree I think his reputation is pretty shot after Villa and then his Saudi move which hasn’t worked out. I can’t see too many clubs rushing to sign him so he may need to eat some humble pie and take a club down in League 1 or 2 and rebuild his reputation

Yeah but Lampard did manage to take by far the best and most expensive squad in the Championship at the time, Derby County, and lead them to a first round play-off elimination. So he’s earned a 10th chance.

He’s probably looking at Carragher, making lots of money for talking gibberish, and questioning his own career choices.

But is he making enough money to have to put up with Nevile and Keane every week?

He’ll end up back at Rangers
