Just finished episode 3 of The Last of Us, loving it so far. I don’t understand how shows like Tbe Walking Dead get so popular when we should be looking for TV with this kind of quality instead.
Its possible not to compare the two?
Granted both are set with a similar premise, but they are quite different.
The Walking Dead had some real quality moments and some poor stuff as well…
But I think they are different
TWD was a bit more fun, TLOU is a more serious production. I was bored of TWD after a few seasons, the formula never seemed to change. I have the same problem with The Mandalorian.
I’ve given up on TLOU anyway, it’s almost a shame they’ve wasted such a well made show on another post-apocalyptic zombie affair.
I’m another who didn’t quite get into Mad Men after giving at a season and a bit. I have no problem with character driven rather than plot driven shows, and the books I read tend to skew that way too, but I just didn’t find many of them very interesting, including Draper, and the setting doesn’t do much for me either.
Maybe I’ll give it another go at some point.
The Walking Dead had a weird dichotomy in that it definitely got its initial attention by riding what was an upswing in interest in serious material about zombies, but it got a lot of its critical acclaim for its treatment of how the people who are left survive. TLOU does that far better and far more meaningfully as the walking dead really only had a one note approach to that issue.
Not really.
The Walking Dead showed redemption for some characters as time progressed.
It also showed burgeoning violence in some meeker characters as time moved on.
There were a couple of brilliant series, followed by banal stuff and bookended by a great last series.
I understand the comparison to The Last of Us, but I genuinely see them as very different propositions.
The struggles of Rick and Crew in the dirst couple of series, and the journey of Negan from ultra bad guy to partially likable was very good tv.
I find most of these dystopian shows are just repeated examples of unlikeable people making terrible decisions. This was especially true of TWD, so I dropped it after some point in the first season, though saw bits here and there as the Mrs continued with it for quite a while.
I found TLOU a real shame as it was obviously quality acting and writing throughout, but it was very clear what it was going to be to me, and turned out that way with “I have to find my brother”…then immediatiely leave and “We have to get you back to your people”…and then immediately kill them and leave.
Mad Men though was one of my favourite shows. Always consistent, never outstayed it’s welcome and finished without jumping the shark. Actually surprised me how much I liked it, because the first time I caught an episode it seemed a bit soap opera-ish.
Different strokes for different folks I guess.
Annoyed at the lack of news for the Riftwar series after setting up a studio to produce it over 12 months ago
Z Nation was way better than Walking Dead
Except for Shaun Of The Dead, which relies on the fact that zombie films are crap.
I’d stick slasher films in the same category with the exception of Psycho which clearly had much more going on.
Zombie films remind me of our midfield.
Ive been enjoying the new season of Ted Lasso so far
Looking forward to the return of Barry
I’d add franchise films in there as well. It seems nowadays that if a film is successful/well received then the studio just remakes them with a similar plotline and just increases the title by a number.
Apparently there are going to be another 3 Star Wars films. Probably involving a plot about blowing up a planet.
Watched them all have you?
All black and white films are shite then.
And I know that’s not true.
Actually, I’ve just thought of another good Zombie pic: 28 Days Later. Essentially, that was a retelling of Day Of The Triffids but with infected people instead of walking plants.
As with most formulaic genres, it’s what else is going on that’s interesting. If it’s just zombies or slashers or superheroes they are, as @cynicaloldgit eloquently puts it, crap.
Serpent and the rainbow was fairly good i thought. Different type of zombie flick.
The Romero movies are not my thing but they were a fairly new phenomenon and carried some social commentary which i think should count as a positive
I’m loving this new season of Succession. The Episode this past week was superb.
I’ll have to wait a while for the new one, don’t have Sky Atlantic where it is being shown here in Germany. If anyone spoilers this there will be severe consequences, love that show.
