There is no question that they didnāt deliver, but I think itās more than a case of not having source material. As has been well documented, they still had the direction from GRRM and went with it where he thought they should. I think the bigger issue is that itās far easier to build an interesting world than it is to pull yourself out of it to tie up a story in a coherent and satisfying way. We dont yet know whether GRRM himself is going to be able to do it, and I have no doubt that a big part of the delays weāve experienced with the books have been because heās suffering from this very issue.
There arenāt many series both me and the misses really get into, Mindhunter, ManHunter, Breaking Bad are three weāve been hooked on from the first episode.
Especially considering she likes Married and First sigh for fucks sake!
Second season was about the Atlanta Olympics bombing, the same material Eastwood developed for the Richard Jewel film (the focus of the investigation). Something must have changed with the production as it was not easy to figure out how to access here in the US either.
Yeah Mindhunter was great, the guy who played Ed Kemper in that was eerily good. Shame we never got to see them delve into the BTK story more.
Marco Polo I enjoyed, it just never seemed to gain any traction at all in terms of viewership which I found a bit surprising. It had a beautiful setting, was filled with intrigue and had some fantastic combat scenes.
It poses the question, what is the best show that was prematurely cancelled? Iād put forward both Rome and Firefly into the conversation.
Depends what you mean by premature. HBO were ready to cut Rome after 1 season because it was so expensive, but decided it needed the second season to end in a coherent and satisfying way, so they threw even more money at the second season so it could go out on a high.
One probably no one here has heard of was a network comedy called Better Off Ted from the late 00s. It was unusual for network tv in it was actually funny. Had it been made 10 years later Im sure itās high critical acclaim would have seen it saved by Netflix or Hulu.
What was confusing about it? Even if you couldnāt put the pieces together there was a scene where Jackās dad explicitly explained that everything that happened on the island was real and they didnāt die until afterwards. The flash sideways was just them finding each other in the afterlife so they could cross over together (100s of years after the events of the show as they had to wait for Hurley to be done with his turn as protector of the island).
Donāt know how many of the people have seen the Broadway show Hamilton, but the guy who plays Holden (the main character) was the show stealing King George in the original production. After connecting those dots I weirdly found the performance in Mindhunter even more impressive.
Luther had 5 series but it still ended too early. What a great watch that was. Think there was talk of doing a film but I think that would kind of change it.
It wasnāt just the ending of Lost, I remember being disappointing with it from S4 onwards. It was a classic example of a show that got extended because it was so popular. The writers ran out of ideas.
Has anyone watched The North Water? Iām 2 episodes in and itās incredible so far. Just finished Time as well which was excellent. Any other good mini-series Iām all ears.
I agree. They knew how they were going to end it but didnāt know how many seasons they were going to get, so everything from season 3 onwards was just filler.
They also had a writers strike at some point.
There were so many storylines that for one reason or another they just dropped and never came.back to.
One of my favourite shows is Mad Men and I personally think you can see the benefit of having a plan in place and consistent writing team as the quality remains high throughout the whole seven seasons.
