The TV Thread redux

Is Succession any good?

Havenā€™t seen the show yet, but caught an advert this week and was surprised to see Barry from ā€˜The Smoking Roomā€™ in it. (Jeremy Swift playing Higgins). One of my favourite uk comedies of the last 20+ years (along with Early Doors and Phoenix Nights!).

I would agree with that, the only show that spring to mind that finished on a real high was Breaking Bad.

For me the worst ending was Lost, in its confusing purgatory outcome. It might as well have finished with someone waking up and saying it was all a dream.

The fact people refer to it as confusing is one of the most confusing aspects of it. With the exception of the flash sideward in the final season, what was shown was all ā€œrealā€ and nothing about the church scene says anything different.

Just starting a Korean drama called Hospital Playlist (Season 2) right now. Really enjoyed season 1ā€¦but I have forgotten a lot of the details from the 1st season. The main story focused on 5 doctors/friends in different disciplines from the same hospital, with the additional stories from the interns.

Another series that I really like was Romantic Doctor Master Kim (seasons 1 & 2). I might have mentioned them in here or on the old forum.

Yeah but the flash sideways was basically purgatory (which was half the end season) none of it mattered, it waste of time. When combined with flash backs and flash forwards (of prior seasons) and that, many people had spent most of the season believing it was some kind of alternative reality where they were not on the plane, it was confusing.

I think most people thought that it was purgatory from the start rather than just season 6, when it showed the crashed plane on the empty beach.

I guess it was also the whole reunion kind of aspect to it as well. Having died all at different points over several seasons. Everyone all waiting to greet, and needing to remember connections.

Its years and years since I watched it, but for me the series fell flat. Much worse than GOT did.

never watched LOST, but holy shit it must have been an absolutely horrendous ending to be worse than GOTā€¦let aloneā€¦ā€˜much worseā€™.

didnt think such a thing could exist to be honest.

the end of GOT actually felt like they were taking the piss and tanking it on purposeā€¦it was THAT bad that a two year old could draw a finger painting of a scene and it would have been betterā€¦

Started squid game. 2 episodes in and itā€™s decent.
Iā€™ve put the Subtitles on as I canā€™t stand dubbed things

And it felt worse because it was very good till season 4 and perhaps till season 6, and they had so much more they could have done with the baseline they created. There cannot be a worse ending than GOT. Two and half men last episode comes close to piss taking though. (Yeah, I competed it after Charlie left as well)

Sadly it had lost itā€™s appeal a couple of seasons before that, in my view.

Although I did give the new series a try with Kutcher, but he just wasnā€™t as good a character as Charlie Sheen had managed to create

Hi,
didnt know they made a sereis out of it. I read the book - would you still recommend to watch it ?
Brendan Gleeson is an actor i like very much.

I am into crime series and my all time 10/10 is true detective season 1.
after all i have seen only Mare of Easttown and The fall comes close for me.
I watched 2 seasons of the wire and cant understand why everybody is so enthusiastic about it. i found season 1 ok, not more.

For me GoT had the worst ending of any show, but perhaps only because of the ridiculously high standard it set itself.

Lost was a bad ending but moreso because when everyone guessed the ending during season 1 the producers denied that would be the case only to bloody well go and do it. It had already lost itā€™s way a bit before that as they were just making up season 3 and 4 as they went along and werenā€™t part of the original ā€˜planā€™.

I enjoyed the ending of Mad Men and after a week of thinking about it, Boardwalk Empire too.

The Wire was not a great ending, but it was an appropriate ending that the cycle of the lives depicted just continue to turn anf there is no END. At least thatā€™s what I got from it.

They didnā€™t. People who guessed ā€œtheyā€™re dead and in purgatoryā€ were not right. That part of the final season was an epilogue to the story, not the explanation for what was happening in the story.

Game of Thrones suffered a slow and perhaps inevitable decline as soon as they went beyond the source material. The show runners were clearly well out of their depth in terms of interpreting and adapting the ending GRRM had discussed with them. It was quite telling how leading up to the last season the actors involved didnā€™t bother to hide there disappointment with the writing.

I also think many aspects werenā€™t covered as they wanted to make more out of the spin offs.

Ah no! The last season was so so poor compared to the othersā€¦ His wife made me want to switch it off anytime she spoke!!

Sopranosā€™ has to be the best! What a series.

Band of Brothers and The Office end well also!

Did acted well then I believe.

I agree broadly with ISMF though. There were certain episodes which are very slow but itā€™s worth the end they came up with. Very nicely concluded.

Office US I wasnā€™t expecting but yet again very nicely concluded. Some of the quotes from last episodes were so nice and thought provoking.

It was more the complete character flip and it just seemed everything in the final series went a little bit silly. Until then I think I enjoyed it so much because it just kept on the right side of reality.

Donā€™t get me wrong itā€™s a fantastic series, with the last season disappointing for me.

I thought the ending to Breaking Bad was fine but it suffered by having ā€œvillainsā€ who were far less interesting than those in the earlier seasons. The thing with the gun in the car was a bit shit as well.

Iā€™d take a poor final season over the current trend of cancelling shows after a 2-3 seasons (Netflix particularly bad for this), starting to lose count of the number of great shows being pulled before being able to close things out (GLOW, Santa Clarita Diet, Last Man on Earth, Colony, The OA, Mindhunter, sure thereā€™s moreā€¦)
