The TV Thread redux

I genuinely don’t remember any of that :man_shrugging:

That’s what a lot of telly seems like to me these days. Even if it’s good it feels completely disposable and I recall very little of the details shortly afterwards

The Rig - Season 2.
I feel compelled to look, to see if its as shockingly bad as season one

As someone that probably watched the original Alien like 15+ times as a kid, please don’t be shit.

Noah Hawley hasn’t done anything that is not good, in my opinion, but Alien almost comes with a curse… Hopefully he’s the one to break that curse.

I’d also watch literally anything with Timothy Olyphant lol

Been getting through quite a bit of TV recently during a bit if a quiet period at work.

The Traitors (US - S1) - 7/10 - Just finished season 1, its a reality tv/gameshow that features a castle full of people trying to guess each day who the “traitors” are. At the same time the traitors are murdering a contestant each night. If a traitor makes it to the end they win.
Very decent tv although I felt there could be some improvements to the format - for example half the episode is then playing a game/challenge to earn money for the end game prize pot but there is no incentive for a traitor to do anything other than help the team win since they all play fir the same prize. I think traitors should have to ruin the game without being caught.

Squid Game (S2) - 8/10 - Actually had quite low expectations because I predicted it being a bit of a shitty copycat of season 1 but I think it was good. Doesn’t have the shock factor anymore of course but it stays true to what made the show good. Ends very abruptly so I’m hoping S3 comes out this year.

House of the Dragon (S2) - 7/10 - Its good. Not amazing but definitely good. I like that the show is more political, feels a bit more true to the first 4 seasons of GoT. Did find it to be gratuitous in the sex and violence. GoT did this too but it felt jarring here for some reason.

Dune Prophecy (S1) - 6/10 - I actually like the show it just feels like the whole season is setup. Some of it is pretty deep lore as well which I can’t be arsed with tbh. Don’t mind the slower start though as I think season 2 is setup to be very good.

American Primeval (S1) - 9/10 - Well this show is absolutely brutal. Episode one ends in a fight scene that reminded me heavily of The Revenant and I love the feel of the world overall. I know Mormons are not happy with the representation of Brigham Young in the show and pissing them off gives it a bonus point to me.

The Mandalorian (S3) - 3/10 - Holy crap this one is bad. A complete waste of a season that places the story right back where it was before S2. Story just meanders with no real purpose, fight scenes are just green screen messes.
Show’s internal logic is also ridiculous, jet packs can fly you into space but they don’t have enough fuel to chase a dragon a few miles? Talk about “The Way of the Helmet” every two seconds but forget about it as soon as you need characters faces to be visible for the visuals to flow…
Hint at a battle of some sort with a giant mythical creature below the planet and never pay it off.
That’s not even mentioning how stupid the little Yoda thing looks when fighting.
The Mandalorian had a good first season, decent second but I think the third was so bad we may not get another one.

Loki (S3) - 6/10 - Took me a few episodes to really bed in with this season. Not been a fan of the universe hopping stuff and obviously that’s what this was but I thought the last couple of episodes really tied it all together nicely and it overall was a satisfying ending.

The Madness - 5/10 - Just sort of exists really. Crime/murder mystery that doesn’t have any mystery or major twists. Not a bad show to have on while working since its easy to follow but there is also nothing really gripping. A bit of a miss as there is much more potential in the show.

I liked the third season. First season still the best, but thiis for me was still fine. Instead of season 4 they’re releasing a movie this year. Cant remember if it is intended as a one off or trilogy.

Where there’s money to be made…

They filmed series 2 and 3 back to back. Expect to see it later this year when Netflix needs a subscriber boost.

I’m really enjoying this one.

Will American Primeval Return for Season 2?

If American Primeval returns for another season, the creative team will likely need to look back into American history with an all-new cast. An anthology series isn’t out of the question. It’s also possible that Berg and Kitsch return for a prequel. When directly asked about prequel potential, Berg revealed to THR that, “We’re talking about it right now.”

“That’s the way we’d go if we do it,” Berg continued. “It would be a real big time jump to keep that crew going, but the idea of looking backwards is really interesting to me.”

New series of Sunny…

One of the things I think streaming has negatively impacted is the social aspect of good tv. For shows like Lost a significant part of the experiences was the conversation in between episodes of people trying to process what was happening. Severance S2 seems like the rare streaming show that might generate that so I decided to go live with the episodes as they were released instead of waiting 2 months and binging the series.

As its been years I decided to rewatch S1 in prep. My recollection was I was not as enthused by it as the popular opinion was. I don’t recall exactly what I thought was missing, but I felt the reaction was a bit of a “cool kids” response to somthing that was a bit weird and them over rating it. But in my rewatch I enjoyed it FAR more than I remembered from first time around. :man_shrugging:

Based on a True Story S2

Carries on with it’s bonkersness, weirdly funny at times and weirdly weird all the time.

Still a refreshing addition to the Sky platform where they try and make serial killing seem…normal.

Yeah it goes off the rails a bit in terms of plot and silliness, but Messina and Cuoco are really enjoyable and that is enough to make it still worthwhile

Housemate has been watching the night agent. It’s fucking shit. Might have to ban him from the remote

Just finished that one, not very good I agree. Loved the part where a scientist is being forced to make a chemical weapon that he said was only theoretical, probably impossible and a single slight misstep would kill everyone but then 2 minutes later he made 15 batches perfectly :joy:

Wasn’t too bad since I just have it on in the background while working but I wouldn’t have finished it if I had to actually sit and watch it.

It is indistinguishable from the brainless mush of network TV like the various NCIS or FBI shows, but the first season was outrageously successful for them. Before that this isnt what Netflix thought a made in house drama was supposed to be. They put effort and resources into prioritizing content that was differentiated from that network slop. The success of Night Agent S1 surprised them and made them change course from trying to differentiate themselves from network slop to instead try to recreate it. So now the era of premium content being prioritized is pretty much over.
