The TV Thread redux

I believe I’ve made my point perfectly.

I think its culturally important no matter who is involved.
Stephen Graham is one of the best actors around, an alpha lead…, but I think the premise of this show works no matter who is in the lead role. With the caveat that the person can act, obviously.

Severance S2 was an enormous disappointment. I had a funny feeling about the first season, where I found it intriguing, exceptionally well done in some aspects of the production, but ultimately it felt a bit empty and aimless. But on rewatching it landed better. Maybe I’ll feel the same about S2 in time, but I cannot shake the feeling the entire season was an exercise in them realizing they didnt have a viable plot after S1 (the pilot was famous written as a getting the foot in the door exercise but Stiller loved it so much he commissioned the writer to make an entire series based on it) and trying to maneuver things to the point they could actually pursue a real story with S3.

In contrast The Pitt is exceptional. I didnt have much interest in it as it seems so derivative - do we really need another hospital procedural? And is this what anyone wants out of an HBO drama? But I heard enough good things about it to give it a try. Yes it is derivative and so doesnt really tread any new ground, but it just does it all exceptionally well. Sometimes just doing the work well can be enough to make a really good and entertaining tv program.

Bit late with this one but The Last of Us is definitely every bit as good as they all say it is isn’t it? From the outset there’s no letting up, goes from one extreme to the next.

I’m not much of a gamer these days and I’ve never owned a PS console so I only came to learn it was a based off a game adapation after watching, kinda makes me want to go out there and have a quick demo play.

Building Britain’s Superhomes - Channel 4.
Interested in the demolition and construction aspect, but holy fuck the bloke is a massive bell end, with a fucking really annoying accent

Finished watching The Residence. Been long since I watched anything. Any recommendations?

I’ve slowly been doing my first ever Sopranos rewatch. It’s been long enough that I genuinely didnt remember a lot of it, but going through it again I was struck by how much use it got out of retreading the same idea over and over again. Tony has everything in order but now an old crew member returns to town and wants in on the action without respecting the way things are today and causes Tony trouble. Tony deals with him and everything is back to normal…and now another guy…

wheel of time season three is quite good.

im a book lover and despite all the usual ‘controversy’ about ‘real fans’ etc etc…the show itself is coming into its own quite nicely, after a very shaky season 1

Not available on Netflix

Watching Gang’s of London. Not sure what I expected from it but it has to be the most brutal, over-the-top television ever made. Game of Thrones thinks this level of violence is a bit much!

I find the quality to change depending on the director of the episode but it’s fine.

I did notice that the Irish farm house they go to in episode 8 is the same farm house that was used in Children of Men as the hideout of the Fishes. So that was fun.

Yeah, if it was longer I probably would have given up, but its a manageable number of episodes that allows you to overlook some of its silly excesses and just go with it.

I’m loving the ludicrous over the top violence. It’s actually quite funny and certainly entertaining. I think the writers and directors challenge themselves to create the most crazy scenes. Ep 5 where the woman gives birth while being chased by the other bad guys (who is good or bad?) and strangles one dude with the umbilical cord!! Gold. Some of the acting is quite good though.

Apparently, Warp films, who produced Adolescence, are rumoured to be making a remake of Threads, the BBC TV film from 1984 which was quite possibly the most terrifying thing I’ve ever seen on TV:

I can’t see thing confirmed anywhere, so I am hoping it’s just AI produced news content getting its knickers in a twist.

Ah, here’s the root story:

Warp’s next production, the revenge thriller Reunion, which begins on Monday, is set in and around Sheffield. It is billed as a bilingual series featuring both British Sign Language and spoken English. Warp also revealed that it has acquired the option to develop Threads, the critically acclaimed 1984 film depicting Sheffield during a nuclear war. Feller said it was another example of featuring ordinary British people against the backdrop of a provocative topic.

“The way the original film was written and made, it absolutely had that voice with Sheffield,” she said. “That’s the kind of place, again, where you find that very rounded heart to the storytelling.”

So not confirmed at all. Acquiring the rights means that they could make it, but it also means that they could veto it based on another project that they are working on.

Kinda cool how they went from an independent electronic music label to a film/TV production company making waves as well.
