The TV Thread redux

Only just found out Paramount+ is free when you have Sky Cinema…& I’ve been a sky customer for about 10 years on and off.

Anyone know if it’s a new feature?

Yrs i think so. Only just sawxthe advert for it yesterday.

Yeah did bit more digging and looks like it was only introduced June of this year, can’t ever recall seeing it before…might tune into the newest Scream movie.

Also halfway through Reacher, I noticed last night the Prime Video home screen has completely changed…it’s gone all netflixxy.

I just love the main characters there, in the US version. Phenomenal.

How are they better than the phenomenal characters in the UK version?

I’ve only seen the first episode of the US Office. Couldnt get into it. Maybe i will try again.

Is there a US version of Phoenix Nights?

I can only imagine how bad an American version of Phoenix nights would be.

The first season of the US Office is just a rubbish imitation of the UK Office - it’s all the same jokes, just done far, far worse. It doesn’t work at all.

From season 2 onwards the show develops its own style, and becomes ‘inspired by’ rather than an imitation. I’d skip season 1 completely and go straight to 2.

It very quickly took a HARD turn into textbook US sitcom tropes. If you can accept the show as simply a fairly traditional US sitcom that has no expectation of comedic realism then it might work.

Based on how bland the first season 6 episode run was I think that was the only way for the group of people involved were going to make it work. They leaned into what they knew and made it their own. But I think the turn was also reflective of the US TV network culture of the time. The business model in that pre-streaming era was that a network would build its entire schedule around a couple of high profile shows. The idea being that one popular show would make the network “sticky” and get more eyeballs on other shows on the same network. The Office was bought to be one those Flagpole shows, and that required it to have as broad in appeal as possible, which a faithful adaptation of the original was never going to be. A Flagpole show also needs longevity, a concept that can be squeezed and squeezed into long seasons and running for years. The dynamics the original was based on have a naturally limited shelf life where they quickly start feeling pathetic rather than funny, which is largely why Gervais and Merchant did so few episodes of their version. So the American version turned their characters into cartoon versions of the originals, and at the point Gareth is no longer just an insecure brown-noser (character almost everyone will have experienced), but a but an absurd Amish adjacent beetroot farmer whose main characteristic is cartoonish absurdity (someone who doesnt exist anywhere outside of sitcom land) you’ve now got a lot more runway with that character and the things you can make him do.

Interesting. I was trying to decide between this and the Lincoln Lawyer last night. I chose the later and I cannot express enough how shit it is. For years Netflix has had a reputation for its scripted stuff being a level above network tv. This is very definitely not that.

Reacher was ok, Didn’t think I saw anything with Alan Ritchson in before until I saw he was the voice
of one of the Ninja Turtles.

He looks talks and walks how I’d imagine an action man doll would.

Main problem I had was he and the main cop talked way to fast for me to catch up with everything that was being said.

Much prefer Terminal List if I’m honest.

Is it animation? I heard it’s based on some Neil Gaiman book.

Nope, genuine (except for mythical creatures, it’s hard to find those :grinning:,) however the main character must of had some touchups on his physique.

Not animated.
Episode One: It’s about a powerful being from a mystical world that controls everyone’s dreams. He is captured by a silly cult leader using an amateur spell who then entraps him in a glass bubble for years. Note, there is no toilet in this small glass bubble, he just lays there naked as entertainment for a cult as he refuses to give into the silly cult leaders materialistic demands.

Just watched the trailer and it looks exactly like a bad network TV drama, I always find them way too clean, colour contrast is too high, characters are too attractive… there is a new show coming on a TV network called East New York and the trailer gave the same kind of vibes. Reality not a factor, just cheap throwaway storylines.

Its a bit technicolor alright, like stage set old westerns. Should be more Deadwood than Big Country, as that would authenticate it as true to the source material.
Watched a couple of episodes and dedpite the cleanliness it isnt bad.

Sam Quek on Celeb who’ wants to be a millionaire right now. Let’s gooo.
