The TV Thread redux

Classic. One of the actors died recently, I forget which one.

Just finished BoJack Horseman for the first time. Very good programme.

I found some Welsh thriller on Netflix called Equinox and the pull of home was impossible to resist. Amusingly one of the secondary characters is played by an actor I know from one of the local boozers back home, but despite how comforting hearing the accents was and as spectacular as the landscapes were, it was one of the biggest piles of shit I’ve ever seen. Total tripe. Avoid.

But this is a picture of Dolgellau where it was seemingly filmed

Ah those were the days… watching these episodes for the very first time eh

Well, the GOT prequel is finally here and I’m still not really captured by it. It seemed like retrodden ground, but ultimately I just dont there are big enough stakes in play to make it interesting. It’s a show about internal power struggle within the Targarean family for control of the throne. It starts with a Targ on the throne and ends with one. From the outset im just not sure why I should be invested at all in watching that?

The dragons?

…and the tits?

but in all honesty, they need at least 1 likeable character to root for, even if they then chop off their head, and they haven’t really given us one yet. I’m sure the plan is for the daughter to be the one we root for, but we will see.

I really hope they’ve got more up their sleeve than just that (and the tits). It’s the problem with all prequels, that when you know the boundaries for the plot you have to bring something else interesting to the table to make it feel worthwhile. Simply doing more palace intrigue with new characters and more big showpiece fight scenes from GoT (now with even more dragons) isnt that.

Code 404

Reminds me of someone I used to work with. One acting the clown and one looking to crack the case.

That’s actually enough for me. I don’t know who is going to prevail (not sure if that info is out there) but I’m actively trying not to stumble across it, and all the other houses will pick the dragon they get behind, stab each other in the back, etc.

More Game of Thrones? Didn’t the series end?

@Iftikhar

It’s about a turbulent period in the Targaryen dynasty 200 years or so before the events of the main show.

I’ll confess to watching the UK Office and actually bringing home the DVD from Australia for Seasons 1-3.

Never watched the US version…probably my err.

GOT - if there was going to be a spin off, Arya Stark was the most interesting character, for me.

I agree, although I would rather like the story to continue. I don’t like spin offs or origin stories in general. They tend , imo, always to be cash-cows and second rate to the actual main story (not that the 2 last seasons were particularly good when the script writers had to actually write and not just rely on Martin). In my experience anyway.

But Arya Stark, yeah, she was absolutely a very interesting character.

One of the issues I had with the show was the conceit of just saying “it’s from essos” to explain the existence of any new power or magic or any plot device they needed to introduce. That to me says that is where any spin off needs to focus, either with the origins of these things and how they got the Westeros (the Doom of Valeyria and Aegon’s Conquest) or Ayra going off over there to explore more.

I couldn’t have considered watching anything that continued from the original series. Every single character was utterly gutted out and destroyed in that final season.

Think I’ve posted that I watched the whole series during the first lockdown and I wasn’t as disappointed with the ending as most other people.

When I saw the scene where Jon Snow bids farewell to his siblings in the final episode it felt to me that it might take up to 10 years but they will continue the series at some point.

Actors are still pretty young.

I have read Fire and Blood: 300 Years Before a Game of Thrones (A Targaryen History) (A Song of Ice and Fire)" by George R.R. Martin (GRRM), which is written like facts and history, and I have already forgotten all the details. House of the Dragon (HotD) is based on a fraction the book, which is completed, and considered as canon to the full “history” of House Targaryen.

I guess that watching HotD is like watching a TV series on a section of historical event, with a lot of artistry and imagination added to the mix.

Because of the whole story is self contained already, I suspect that the writers and producers would not be tumbling around like GoT (at least we hope not)…we are still waiting for GRRM to complete the next book (Book 6: The Winds of Winter), never mind finishing the complete story (Book 7: A Dream of Spring).

Now, I should go back and re-read Fire and Blood.

Yeah, it’s based on the period of the book that covers a Targaryen civil war that occurs in response to a succession crisis. It is portrayed by Martin as the beginning of the end of the dynasty, referred to as the Death of the Dragons. They have to find a point that is worth making that goes beyond telling the story of who comes out on top though, because that question is ultimately pretty unimportant.

To that point there was an interesting nugget the King shared with the princess about Aegon’s conquest being driven by a vision of the coming winter. He then made it a responsibility passed down from king to king to ensure the health and strength of westeros so it was ready to fight when the time came. That isnt in the books, but was asked by Martin to insert it into the episode. This potentially reframes the motivations of numerous Targaryens and while Im not sure that is enough to really be the central hook for this show, it seems likely it will tie into elements of his remaining two books.
