As unreliable as they come (football insider) but I saw some recent links to Joao Gomes from Wolves. Iā€™d like that very much.

Why?

There are no obvious holes apart from needing to address the Robertson question. And chances are, a good left-back that we might be after would not be likely to be let go by their clubs in the middle of a season. The bigger issues would revolve around the likes of Morton, McConnell, and Danns. Will the latter two still go out for loans as originally planned, or are we more likely to keep them with us instead?

As far as Iā€™m aware, we rejected offers for Morton in the summer, preferring to retain him instead, and he even got an interview slot on the official site recently, so Iā€™m wondering whatā€™s the deal with that. At least with Endō you can kind of see the reasoning around keeping him, but with Morton, whoā€™s not gotten any minutes outside of the domestic cups?

I would have thought thereā€™s a strong case for letting both Morton and Endo depart and bringing in a midfielder Slot will use more regularly. I doubt it will happen before summer.

I was hoping weā€™d see some action in January to give us a shot in the arm for the race to the title. With Bournemouth signing Soler I thought Kerkez might come into play, but from their perspective, I would imagine half a season of Soler training and getting adjusted, before letting their main left back depart, would be the way to go.

The striker equivalent of Gary Mac would be ideal right now, in his twighlight years but experienced and still lethal. Latter day Jermaine Defoe. Good value and capable. We all know about our striking issues. Oneā€™s reliably unreliable and the other is unreliably reliable. If Jota or Darwin pull a hamstring, weā€™re left with a rather bare cupboard. No idea who this is but Iā€™d love to see a decent striking stopgap.

Unless Chiesa can perform on the right and move Mo to the middle. We can cycle Gakpo and Diaz all we want but neither is the player we need banging them in. Just please no Robbie Keanesā€¦ā€¦

LB: Obviously.
CB: VvD and the unfit Konate. Gomez and Quansah arenā€™t on the same level.

CM: Endo, Morton donā€™t start because theyā€™re not good enough. Elliottā€™s out of favor, leaving only four midfielders to cover three positions. Lack of numbers for sure. Endo may do the job when needed but Morton is Championship-level.

CF: Jotaā€™s injured again. Diaz is up and down; Nunez is struggling. At this point maybe Danns is our best CF and he is 19 year old with 10 minutes premier league played.

We do have many holes in the squad.

I believe one of Endo/Morton (possibly even both) wouldā€™ve left last summer if we had brought Zubimendi or someone else for that role. I think theyā€™ll be both gone next summer. Morton had two nice seasons of playing a lot of football, Iā€™m pretty sure he wants to go back to that.

And Slotā€™s been quoted a few times this season saying how Chiesa is also an option up top. Salah doesnā€™t like playing up top, heā€™ll remain where he is. But I hope there is no emergency where our only striker option left is Chiesaā€¦

Although we do have the possibility of playing with one or two false #9ā€™s. We did that also in a period of one game, I think it was Brighton in the cup or something like that.

Quick check, and yes, we have scored 7 more goals than the second highest scoring team in the PL, and that over one less game. Having just a dickens of a time banging them in. :man_facepalming:

Iā€™d say that striker and left back are the biggest holes in our squad at this moment, with centre back a close third. Since our defence has been struggling for the past two months or so, maybe itā€™s time to invest in a striker.

While Iā€™d like youngsters to be eased in rather than thrown in the deep end, Iā€™d definitely be against loaning out Danns in January because neither Nunez, nor Jota can be relied upon for different reasons.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly.

Thanks to Salah. We currently are top of the league without a lethal fit striker. Imagine if we had one. Or a good (reliable) fit striker even, But donā€™t try to improve, nahā€¦.

You do realise the problem is that whoever comes in wonā€™t be ā€œon the same levelā€ either? Either they would be on KonatĆ©ā€™s level or better, which means KonatĆ© would probably be benched and either want to leave, or van Dijk isnā€™t getting his contract extended. No team has 4 superstar centre-backs.

All those are your opinions, unfortunately. Whether or not we see any activity is therefore dependent on whether the recruitment team and Arne agree with you. But letā€™s not forget Elliott got injured at a time when he could have been working his way into the team. I think someone suggested that Arne hinted at a recent press conference that Elliott is still getting into rhythm.

I think on the whole, my biggest issue with what youā€™re saying is that theyā€™re all (apart from left-back) in their way short-term problems rather than longer-term issues. Nobody will come in in those areas unless others leave.

Ah thatā€™s where I got that impression from!

Iā€™m guessing Morton more than likely, but Endō perhaps not.
